Tourist Police have used an AI-powered camera system to identify and arrest a wanted suspect in Kanchanaburi province, marking the 676th such detection nationwide. The arrest took place on 18 December 2025 after the system alerted officers to the presence of a person subject to an outstanding warrant at the Kanchanaburi provincial bus terminal, enabling an immediate apprehension and reinforcing security at a key transport hub.

The operation forms part of a broader government-led strategy to promote tourism while strengthening safety at major destinations across the country. Acting under policies set by the government, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and the Royal Thai Police, the Tourist Police Command has ordered all tourist police stations nationwide to take proactive measures, including drug screening and the deployment of advanced technology, particularly during the high season.

Kanchanaburi is one of Thailand’s principal tourist destinations, known internationally for its historical sites, natural attractions and cultural heritage. The province ranks third nationally for tourist arrivals, drawing a steady flow of both Thai and international visitors, which has prompted intensified security operations to protect public confidence and the province’s tourism image.

As part of these efforts, Tourist Police conducted random urine tests on staff at tourism-related establishments across the province. A total of 295 employees from 24 establishments were tested, with no illegal substances detected and all venues were reported to have cooperated fully with the inspections, indicating shared responsibility among operators in maintaining safety standards.

Tourist Police Commander Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueak-am stated that the AI camera system has become a key tool in preventing and suppressing crime in tourist areas. The successful detection in Kanchanaburi highlights the effectiveness and quality of the technology used by the Tourist Police Command, particularly in crowded public locations where rapid identification is critical.

The Tourist Police have also reiterated their call for public cooperation. Members of the public, tourists and business operators are encouraged to report information relating to drug offences, the exploitation of tourists or other illegal activity via the Tourist Police hotline on 1155, as part of efforts to build safe, fair and accessible tourist communities.

Matichon reported that the Tourist Police plan to continue expanding the use of AI surveillance alongside regular inspections to further raise safety standards nationwide. Authorities say these measures are intended to enhance confidence among visitors and support the sustainable development of Thailand’s tourism sector in line with international standards.

Nah, that's the UK with its penchant for arresting people for thought crime.  This system is getting a-holes off the street.  I for one am okay with that.
