The Royal Thai Army has rebutted Cambodian accusations that it endangered civilians by using cluster munitions, stating they targeted only military sites. Army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree issued this statement following claims by Cambodia's Ministry of Information and other officials, suggesting Thailand's use of M-46 munitions in recent disputes. Cambodia argues these munitions pose a lingering risk to civilians, potentially remaining hidden in populated areas.

Cambodian officials denounced the munitions as dangerous, citing the risk they pose to civilians, particularly children. They described the unexploded elements as traps that could persist after military conflicts, threatening lives in farms, forests, and villages. In refutation, Winthai clarified that these artillery shells are engineered solely for military targets, detonating entirely upon impact, unlike landmines.

Winthai dismissed allegations about unexploded devices being left after operations, accusing Cambodia of twisting facts and compromising Thailand's reputation. He emphasized Thailand adheres to international humanitarian law, applying principles of necessity and proportionality. As neither nation is party to the Convention on Cluster Munitions, Winthai pointed out that the treaty does not legally bind Thailand or Cambodia.

The Thai Army urged an international review of Cambodian military actions, highlighting their use of various weapons inside Thai territory. Winthai reiterated Thailand's commitment to lawful force use and promised transparency to safeguard national security and sovereignty, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand denies misusing munitions, saying they target military, not civilians.
  • Cambodia alleges unexploded munitions pose a civilian threat.
  • Both countries are not bound by the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

It would take just one stray weapon to hit a tourist centre and Thailand will destroy tourism and its economy for a long time.

they should not be escalating this.

"...they targeted only military sites."
