A team of Chinese journalists from China Media Group conducted a fact-finding mission in Sisaket province on December 24th to assess damage caused by recent weapons fire from Cambodia. Their visit, facilitated by Col. Phasakorn Plotnai-Mueang, deputy commander of the 2nd Development Regiment, focused on civilian areas in the Saothongchai subdistrict, Kantharalak district. This inquiry aims to evaluate the extent of the impact on local communities and infrastructure.

The journalists examined multiple sites affected by the cross-border conflict. Notable locations included the home of Mr. Don Patchaphan, who was killed by BM-21 shrapnel in Ban Nong Mek village. They also visited a community shelter, the “Hathaitip Fund” bunker, with a capacity of 40 people, Ban Phonthip School, and six severely damaged houses in Ban Saothongchai village. Interviews were conducted with village security volunteers and community leaders to gather firsthand accounts of the events and their repercussions.

Reports from the area highlight that military strikes from Cambodia have hit civilian areas rather than military targets, inflicting hardship and significant losses among the local population. Damage has been reported to homes, property, and community infrastructure. The strikes have also disrupted agricultural activities, impacting household livelihoods and leading to school closures, which further affect children's education and quality of life.

Looking ahead, the findings from this journalistic visit could contribute to international awareness and potential diplomatic discussions concerning cross-border tensions. Efforts to address and mitigate the impact on affected communities are anticipated as local authorities and international observers consider steps to ensure security and restore normalcy, reported Khaosod.
