Are there any limits on 90-day visas based on marriage?

Featured Replies

Is there any limit on the number of times within a calendar year (or any other period of time) in

which you can apply for a 90-day visa based on marriage and have a reasonably sure chance of success?

There is no limit however would be poor strategy imo.

Outline ongoing plan of stays in Thailand for best advice.

Annual extensions based on marriage has minimal financial requirements.

Yes lot of paperwork however best option ongoing.

My plan is to either spend the entire rest of my life in Thailand.

Or else spend most of the year in Thailand and then like two months per year in Laos.

I will likely try for annual marriage extension at some point in 2026.

Best to obtain the Non O eVisa out side of Thailand and enter with the Non O.

Open Thai bank account if you don't already have one.

Obtain 12 month extension.

Obviously obtain a reentry permit to protect your extension (permission of stay) for the trips to Laos.

How many particular visa types are issued within a certain timeframe is at the discretion of the relevant Thai Embassy/Consulate.

I can recall pre Covid, when it was only 30 day VE entries and folk were obtaining TV's from local Thai Embassies in an attempt to stay long term in Thailand, the Embassies restricted the number of visas they'd issue and place a stamp in your passport advising you couldn't apply any further ............ at least not at the same Embassy/Consulate.

So if I want to upgrade from 90-day visa based on marriage to a full year, when is the best time to apply for the full year extension?

I suspect it is right before my 90 days expire, but I am not certain.

I have a Thai bank account, but not yet 400k in that account.  How long must I have the 400k in my Thai bank account in order to meet Thai immigration requirements once I apply for full-year?

You have a stamp in your passport.

It has an expiry date. You can apply for 12 month extension up to 45/30 days prior to expiry date and up till expiry date.

The reason stated 45/30 is that some large offices eg CW CM etc are 45 early while most offices are up to 30 prior.

For the financials you must have the funds seasoned for 2 months prior to date of application.

Just for your understanding: you are not upgrading your Visa to some imaginary one year Visa.

The Visa was used when the 90 day stamp (permit) was entered into your pp.

You are asking about extending that permission of stay by one year.

You will do that every year.

Just to add to @DrJack54 informative post above.

You can apply for a 60 day extension to visit Thai spouse to allow more time to season the 400K for 2 months prior to submitting the application.

So I could apply for a one-year extension even after the 90 days if I am on a 60-day extension?

Yes, provided the 400K has been in your Thai bank account for 2 months.

Marriage extension not hard , little more messing around than retirement. I had OA retirement for 5 years, had to change as was rejected for full health insurance due to having a stent. Immigration suggested I change extension to marriage no insurance required.

Think been about 6 years now so find easy to do each year.

Your happy with extension marriage so all good.

If that ever changes you could simply exit Thailand without a reentry and obtain a Non O retirement via eVisa or even from visa exempt entry.
