Two countries pledge in joint statement to halt all forms of attacks and further troop deployments in long-running dispute over contested territory

After weeks of deadly border clashes, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an "immediate" ceasefire! The conflict, which claimed over 100 lives and displaced half a million, will halt with both sides pledging to stop all attacks.

The ceasefire, effective Saturday at noon, covers all weaponry, including those targeting civilians and infrastructure. Both nations vowed to maintain troop positions to avoid heightening tensions, as stated by their defense ministers.

Key agreements also include cooperation on demining and combating cybercrime, marking a move towards long-term peace. Despite talks, Cambodia accused Thailand of an airstrike on Saturday, underscoring ongoing tensions.

The recent skirmishes, rooted in territorial disputes, escalated despite previous ceasefires mediated by Malaysia and supported by the US. Recent clashes resulted in significant casualties, with Thailand suffering 26 soldier deaths and Cambodia reporting 30 civilian casualties.

Mass evacuations on both sides highlight the conflict's impact. The ceasefire aims to stabilize the region and prevent further escalation.

Key Takeaways

  • Ceasefire pledged after deadly clashes displaced thousands.
  • Agreements focus on stopping all forms of attacks and cooperation.
  • Ongoing tensions highlight challenges to lasting peace.

Let's hope Cambodia has modern-ish communications to tell the boots on the ground..............😬

I think this is a real concern. I would not be surprised if Phnom Penh doesn’t have full operational control over their own forces in border areas.

Will they reopen borders now?

Up to the Military leaders on both sides - Thailand is reported to be waiting to see how things go this time. Last time a few Cambodian troops/activists did not obey the order and it all escalated again.  Cambodia military is not as 'disciplined' as the Thais - not by a long way - command and control from HQ in Cambodia is very limited/slow.

My concern is that Thailand sends soldiers to check the border without minesweeping first - or simultaneously.
