Hi, my annual non B visa renewal is slated for next March, but my passport is due to expire next August. So will immigration grant me a shortened visa ie to match the August passport expiration date or the full year contingent on transferring visa stamp to new passport when it is completed? It used to be the usa embassy gave a letter to take to immigration when you got a new passport, but that was 10 years ago and they don’t do that anymore… And I suspect immigration rules may also have changed. Anybody with recent experience is this situation? Any limits on how early usa passports can be renewed? but I would like to maximize my passport duration. thanks

If you get an extension, it will never be longer than the validity of your passport.  You will not get the remained after you get a new passport.  You just lose the time, and your annual extension date will change to that new date forever.

 

The US embassy and many others no longer provide a letter with a new passport.  The immigration offices are well aware of this.

 

You should be able to renew early enough to get the full year.

Why not renew your pp now. 

Like @DrJack54 said, if you apply for a yearly extension and your passport isn't valid the year, you get the extension until the passport expires AND you lose the rest of the time. <- In your case meaning IF you don't renew your passport BEFORE you go get the extension your NEW renewal date will be Aug from now on. 

I'd say just suck it up and renew your US passport BEFORE you go for the extension. It's taking about 40-50 days to renew US passports by mail now and that's from the date you mail off the packet until you get both passports delivered to your door.. Just renew your passport and take BOTH of them with you when you apply for the extension so they can move all the stamps and ink the new extension into your new passport
