A coordinated effort to manage and develop the Pha Daeng geoheritage site in Sahatsakhan district, Kalasin, was launched on 28 December, bringing together government officials, community leaders, tourism operators and residents. The initiative aims to strengthen conservation while supporting eco-tourism and nature-based travel linked to the Kalasin Geopark network. The meeting and subsequent site visit is expected to shape future management guidelines for one of the province’s most prominent geological landmarks.

The consultation was held at Sirindhorn Museum in Sahatsakhan district, with Ms Pornpen Chantasit, Director of Sirindhorn Museum, presiding over the opening ceremony. The project is overseen by Mr Phubet Sakha, a professional geologist, as project lead. A total of 60 participants attended, including heads of government agencies, private-sector tourism operators, community leaders, subdistrict heads, village chiefs, students and local residents.

Following the discussion session, participants conducted a field visit to Pha Daeng at Phu Sing, an area noted for its largely intact natural condition. The group explored forest walking routes with a total return distance of more than four kilometres. The visit was designed to complement the meeting by allowing stakeholders to observe the site’s physical characteristics and tourism potential first-hand.

Ms Pornpen stated that the meeting aimed to gather opinions on managing the Pha Daeng geoheritage site and linking it with other geoheritage locations within the Kalasin Geopark area. Activities included lectures on geology and geoheritage management, as well as group discussions to develop practical management approaches. The programme also incorporated on-site study at the Pha Daeng geoheritage location.

Pha Daeng at Phu Sing features three access routes, each with different contextual characteristics. The Sahatsakhan District Tourism Promotion Club has selected a route starting from Wat Phutthawat Phu Sing to Pha Daeng Phu Wing. This route covers a four-kilometre round trip and has been used as a pilot eco-tourism and adventure tourism trail under the Department of Tourism for more than two years.

SiamRath reported that as a result of this trial use, Pha Daeng has become more widely known and has emerged as a popular destination for visitors seeking nature-based experiences. The outcomes of the consultation are expected to inform future management planning, with a focus on conservation, learning and sustainable tourism linked to the broader Kalasin Geopark.
