The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) is hosting "NARIT AstroFest 2026" on January 10, 2026. Coinciding with National Children’s Day, the event offers free public viewing of Jupiter at its opposition across five locations. The festival runs from 9 am to 10 pm, featuring both daytime activities and night-time observations.

Jupiter's opposition, when Earth passes between the Sun and Jupiter, happens every 13 months, making this an ideal time for viewing. Observatories participating include Princess Sirindhorn AstroPark in Chiang Mai, and regional observatories in Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Chachoengsao, and Songkhla.

Experts explain that during opposition, Jupiter appears at its brightest and largest in the night sky. This celestial alignment allows the planet to be visible all night, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise. AstroFest aims to leverage this phenomenon to educate and engage the public.

NARIT offers tips for optimal viewing: Jupiter is a bright, cream-white "star" to the naked eye. Binoculars can reveal it as a disk along with its four largest moons, while a telescope offers views of its cloud bands and potentially the Great Red Spot.

Looking forward, NARIT emphasizes the educational aspect of AstroFest, encouraging families to participate. As Jupiter's next opposition will not occur until 2027, this year's event presents a unique opportunity for enthusiasts and casual observers alike.

Key Takeaways

  • AstroFest 2026 provides free public access to view Jupiter at its brightest.

  • The event takes place at one astronomy park and four observatories in Thailand.

  • Jupiter's opposition offers a unique opportunity to observe the planet in detail.
