A 42-year-old man was found dead in his home in Udon Thani after a strong smell prompted his aunt to check on him, police said. The body, discovered on January 3, 2026, was found in a state of decomposition, indicating he had been dead for two to three days. Officers are treating the death as non-suspicious following an initial investigation.

Police from Sang Khom Police Station received a report of an unexplained death at a two-storey wooden-and-concrete house in Udon Thani province. The response team included Pol Col Kant Tangvijit, forensic officers, a duty doctor from Sang Khom Hospital, investigators and rescue volunteers from the Udon Sawang Methatham Foundation. A large number of local residents gathered outside the property as officers secured the scene.

The deceased was identified as Mr Kaveesak the homeowner, who lived alone. His body was found lying on its back on the floor of an upstairs bedroom, wearing light blue shorts and a long-sleeved printed T-shirt. There were bloodstains on his hands and both legs and a single incised wound was visible on his neck.

A chopping board, a machete with blood residue and a cannabis pipe were found near the body. Police reported no signs of a struggle or forced entry. Medical examiners estimated the time of death at approximately two to three days prior to discovery.

According to the victim’s 70-year-old aunt, who was the first to find the body, she became concerned after not seeing her nephew leave the house for three days and noticed the smell coming from his home. She said he had no visitors since New Year’s Day and lived alone due to ongoing mental health issues. She told police he often verbally abused relatives, leading family members to keep their distance.

Pol Col Kant said the man had a long history of psychiatric illness and substance abuse, including methamphetamine use, cannabis consumption and alcohol. He was unemployed and relied on relatives and neighbours for money, while his mother lived in another province. Investigators believe he may have experienced hallucinations and fatally injured himself with the machete.

Khoasod reported that authorities stated that no witnesses were present at the time of death. The body was transferred to the forensic department at Udon Thani Central Hospital for a full autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. Police said further procedures would follow once forensic results are confirmed.
