Security forces have seized approximately 600,000 methamphetamine pills after intercepting a suspected drug trafficking operation in northeastern Thailand, with the suspects abandoning their vehicle and fleeing into nearby forest under cover of darkness. The operation, conducted in the early hours of 4 January 2026, resulted in the confiscation of a pickup truck and a large quantity of illegal drugs, though no arrests were made at the scene. Authorities say the seizure represents a significant disruption to cross-border narcotics smuggling routes in the region.

The operation was carried out by Surasak Montri Task Force troops through the 24th Narcotics Suppression and Interdiction Command (NYS.24), under the control of the 3rd Control Unit (8th Infantry Regiment) and the Second Army Region. They worked jointly with Ranger Company Task Units 2109 and 2102, as well as Pak Chom Police Station officers. The coordinated action followed intelligence indicating that a shipment of drugs would be moved through border areas of Loei province.

According to officials, officers set up surveillance along suspected routes in Pak Chom district, Loei province, after receiving a tip-off from an informant. At around 3.00 am, they identified a black Isuzu D-Max pickup truck matching the description of the target vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated and attempted to escape.

The pursuit continued until the vehicle reached a hut without an address near Ban Non Sung Mai, Moo 15, Ban Yuak subdistrict, Nam Som district, Udon Thani province. The suspects abandoned three black sacks in a nearby sugarcane field and fled on foot into a forested area. Due to darkness and terrain, officers were unable to apprehend the individuals.

A subsequent search of the abandoned sacks revealed methamphetamine classified as a Category 1 narcotic, totalling approximately 600,000 pills. The black Isuzu D-Max pickup truck was also seized as evidence. No suspects were found at the scene and their identities remain unknown.

Amatin reported that authorities documented the seizure with photographs and video recordings before transferring the drugs and the vehicle to Pak Chom Police Station. Police have begun a detailed examination of the evidence and say further investigations are under way to identify and track those responsible. Officials confirmed that efforts will continue to expand the investigation and pursue linked trafficking networks in accordance with the law.
