The city of Manila is making extensive preparations for the upcoming "Pahalik" event at Quirino Grandstand scheduled from January 7. In anticipation of thousands of devotees participating in the Feast of the Black Nazarene, five large tents are being set up to accommodate them. Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso assures that the city is ready, with the Manila Police District poised to maintain order and cleanliness in the area.

The tradition, an integral part of the Black Nazarene festivities, has been eagerly awaited, especially since disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Previously, the event was renamed "Pagpupugay" to adapt to health protocols, allowing only visual veneration. This year marks a return to the traditional practice where devotees can once again approach and kiss the revered image.

Both the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the local engineering department are involved in ensuring the safety and comfort of attendees. Covered walkways and medical tents are being erected to provide assistance and immediate medical attention if needed.

Experts believe the full restoration of the Pahalik will have significant cultural and spiritual implications for devotees. "It’s a profound experience to participate so closely once more," commented one religious scholar, emphasizing the importance of tradition in maintaining cultural identity. Mayor Domagoso encourages caution, reiterating the city’s support to ensure a safe event.

Looking forward, officials remain vigilant in monitoring the events and maintaining crowd safety. Continuous updates and reviews of safety protocols will be in place as the situation evolves. The successful execution of this year's Pahalik could set the tone for future large-scale public religious events in the city, reported Manila Bulletin.
