Switching Bank Accounts Mid-Extension

Featured Replies

In another post I outlined the problems I'm having with my Bangkok Bank Fixed Deposit account upshot of which is I may need to close the account and move the monies to my other Bank Account (Also with Bangkok Bank!).

As this is the account I use to support my extension, will closing it have an impact with immigration and if so, what do I need to get from the Bank to ensure that I can show I've met the 400/800K in the bank ("Retirement" extension).

Anybody else switched bank accounts mid-extension?

Thanks

Sam

I did last year. I made sure both accounts had 400k for a few weeks and got 12 month statements for both accounts when going for the extension. As your account will be closed you best get a statement immediately before you close it.

I'm hoping/assuming you are in the period of time where your account needs to show at least 400,000 baht.

If that's the case, the most secure way of doing it is to fund the new bank account with 400,000 baht. Whether that's from your existing account that has 800,000 in it, or you make a new transfer into the new account, the point is to have BOTH of your accounts show 400,000 for a few days. If you do it this way, they cannot say your accounts ever dropped below 400k.

Once that money has had time to settle, then you can transfer the 400k from the old account to the new account, bringing you up to the 800,000 required for the actual extension.

If you are during the period of time where your account must show 800,000 baht, then I would not risk trying to change anything right now.

Don't close the old account, because you are still going to need to get a bank letter and statement from that account for the next extension, to show the funds go back the full 12 months. But starting next year you can just use the new account for immigration.

Thanks, my problem is they won't let me transfer part of the account (That's what started this whole mess in the 1st place) so it's either leave the account as it is or transfer all of it to my savings account which currently only has approx 100K in it (Hence I need money from the FD account).

I could rustle up 100K from my Kasikorn account but if I'm going to go down the route of having another account with 400K in it I'm thinking I should try to get that account to 400K (& then 800K come June, extension is due in September) and forget about using Bangkok Bank for future extensions.

An option, however when I closed my Kasikorn FD months prior to applying for extension, I was still able to obtain bank statement days prior to application.

Clearly you are currently in the "min 400k months".

Suggest you (somehow) get the Kasikorn account up to 400k +

When that's been done cancel the FD a/c with BBL.

Obviously build the K account up to 800k as required min 2 months prior to application for extension.

Note: When I cancelled my FD account with Kasikorn I was still able to obtain 12 month bank statement months later.

Also keep your cancelled bank book as immigration were very unhappy I allowed bank to take it.

Thanks @DrJack54, I have no problem getting my KBank account up to 400K except the crappy exchange rates...

My best mate has offered to put 300K in to my Kbank account for a few months (It's not charity, we've done this for each other since either of us had money and funny enough I loaned him 300K for 6 months last year when he bought his house and misjudged the expense for furnishings, Aircon etc... ) but the GF won't allow it (Loss of face borrowing money from a friend) so I might have to eat the crappy exchange rate after all :(

In your expert opinion do you think being able to show 400K in a different bank account mid-term (extension wise) would be ok (as long as I bring it up to 800K 2 months before, it will be more than that the moment they close my FD account).

Yes.

The two guys that posted earlier are very across visas etc. (expert advice)

Read again post from BrandonJT

As has been stated before… I would make sure you have a certified bank statement of the account you are closing before you close it…. You don’t want to be in a situation months later when they say they can’t generate a statement on a closed account…

Had a chat with the GF and rather than ask my mate for help (and her lose face), she's going to put 400K in my Kasikorn account if we can't sort the problem.

Technically that's my money (Been together 7 years & I stuck 1 million THB in her account last Jan as I was already sick of Bangkok Bank policies) but nice to see

You should only need it for a few days at most. Open Kasikorn account. Fund Kasikorn account. Wait a couple days. Close BKK account and move the funds to Kasikorn. Return borrowed funds.

I've moved fixed term account 3 times. I've always done it same day, so no "holes" in deposit. Today, I would advise other to do it as suggested by @BrandonJT , so there is 400k baht in both accouts upon move.

Because it is the same bank, you can transfer funds from one account to the other with no problems. I have done this with Bangkok Bank.

Just get statements from each account for the next extension of stay.

If you were changing banks then there would be a problem.

I think Brandons advise is very good.

But as i do Not speak english very well, i can't understand why change a Account.

One smal thing, next Extension, the money has to stay for 3 month.

I think Dr.J. did writh 2 month.

Many people are trying to get away from Bangkok Bank and using a different bank so they don't have their funds needlessly frozen for many months every year.
