A former Thai police officer, Chainat Nongpue, fatally stabbed Sergeant Major First Class Sangkhom Tonlo in Khon Kaen province. The attack occurred on the morning of January 6 when Sangkhom, 51, was at home after returning from duty at the Thai-Cambodian border. Chainat, 67, allegedly entered the house without permission and attacked Sangkhom from behind while he was on the phone.

Witness Sakhon Kunkwan, Sangkhom's 72-year-old uncle, reported that a struggle ensued, during which both men were injured. They were taken to Ubonrat Hospital, where Sangkhom died of his injuries, while Chainat remains in critical condition. According to Sakhon, the two men had a longstanding conflict, though the immediate cause of the attack is unclear.

Sangkhom, who had recently returned home for the New Year holiday, was well-liked in his community and known for helping others. He had been stationed at the border in Ubon Ratchathani province and had just received time off from his intensive duties. Police are waiting for Chainat's condition to stabilize before proceeding with questioning and any legal actions.

In a related incident, a restaurant waiter was fatally stabbed on January 4 by a customer after a dispute over a missing bucket of ice. The suspect was intoxicated and attacked the worker after an argument, according to police reports, reported The Thaiger.
