Authorities in Buriram province are searching for a large crocodile reportedly seen in a reservoir used to produce tap water, prompting safety warnings for local residents. The sighting, supported by video recorded by villagers, has led officials to restrict access to the water while investigations continue.

The incident was reported on 7 January 2026, when villagers fishing at the reservoir alerted authorities after seeing a large crocodile surface. The reservoir is located at Ban Nong Samet, Moo 3, Lam Nang Rong subdistrict, Non Din Daeng district and serves as a raw water source for village water supply.

Officials from Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in Buriram, together with district fisheries officers, Non Din Daeng police, local administrative officials and village leaders, inspected the site following the report. Although the crocodile was not found during the initial search, officials said the evidence provided by villagers, including mobile phone footage, proves that a crocodile is present.

Authorities noted that a crocodile had previously been found in the same reservoir several years ago, though it is unclear how many crocodiles may now be in the area. Due to this uncertainty, officials have begun publicising warnings advising residents not to enter the water for safety reasons until the situation is resolved.

Mr Ongart Kham Saram, village headman of Lam Nang Rong subdistrict, said the reservoir has been dredged by state agencies and used for many years as a source of raw water for local tap water production. He said the reservoir covers an area of approximately three rai and is connected to nearby ponds, which could allow wildlife to move between water bodies.

According to Mr Ongart, villagers immediately contacted relevant authorities after spotting the crocodile, enabling a coordinated response from multiple agencies. He added that the crocodile seen in the footage appeared large, increasing concern among residents who rely on the reservoir for daily water use.

Officials also recalled that a crocodile had previously been sighted in a nearby pond, raising the possibility that the animal has moved into the reservoir. Warning signs are being prepared to further alert residents to avoid entering the water until officials can capture the crocodile or confirm that the area is safe.

Naewna reported that further searches are expected to continue as authorities assess the risk and determine appropriate measures. Residents have been urged to cooperate fully with safety guidance while officials work to locate and manage the crocodile.
