Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Hit by 400-Baht Omelette Row

Authorities in Ratchaburi have launched inspections and pricing controls at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market after tourists complained of excessively priced food, including a 400-baht plain omelette and a 1,400-baht egg fried rice. The case triggered widespread criticism online and prompted intervention by provincial commerce officials and police to protect tourists and the market’s reputation.

The controversy emerged after the popular Facebook page “E-Sor Kha Yee Khao: E-Sor” shared tourists’ experiences at a restaurant in the famous floating market. The post highlighted what were described as shockingly high prices, particularly for simple dishes with no meat, leading to intense public backlash and scrutiny of pricing practices at tourist attractions.

On 9 January 2026, Ratchaburi Provincial Commerce Officer Thoranin Banyongworaphinit led a joint inspection with police, local administrators, Internal Security Operations Command officials and other agencies. The restaurant, located along Damnoen Saduak Canal and accessible only by boat, was found to have displayed menu prices clearly and in full.

The shop owner, identified as Ms Jaeng, explained that prices were high due to multiple costs, including rent, staff wages, ingredients and a boat commission of about 900 baht per trip paid to drivers who bring customers. She confirmed that customers paid the stated prices without dispute at the time and said the restaurant would reduce prices and review its cost structure following the public reaction.

Mr Thoranin said preliminary checks found prices to be unreasonably high, with the operator admitting the prices were inappropriate. Officials will summon the owner for further questioning, conduct a detailed cost review and gather evidence, warning that selling goods at unfairly high prices carries penalties of up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both under the Price of Goods and Services Act 1999.

The provincial commerce office also reinforced strict enforcement of price display regulations across the market. During the recent New Year period, more than 14 shops were prosecuted for failing to display prices, with repeat offenders facing doubled fines to prevent tourist exploitation and safeguard the province’s tourism image.

Manager online reported that further scrutiny followed comments shared by the “Mor Lab Panda” page on 10 January 2026, featuring foreign tourists describing Damnoen Saduak as a “tourist trap” and a “nightmare”. Officials confirmed that the restaurant agreed to immediately lower prices, update menus by 12 January 2026, and submit detailed cost documents on 16 January 2026.

Key Takeaways

• Authorities found food prices at the inspected restaurant to be excessively high despite clear menu displays.

• The operator agreed to cut prices and face a detailed cost investigation under pricing laws.

• Officials are tightening oversight to protect tourists and Damnoen Saduak’s reputation.

The prices are ridiculous high, but everybody can sell things for the price they want.. The customer is one who buys it and is willing to pay the price.. If the price is too high don't buy, but if you decide to buy don't complain, as you knew before what you had to pay.

Now it are Thais who are scammed and it is a problem, for foreigners no problem.. they are rich( in the eyes and minds of Thai people). But it is ridiculous to give a prison sentence for the sellers.. just confiscate their license to sell there and a fine if they did wrong, but if the prices were published, there should be no problem. The customer decide to buy it...

If the prices were posted before the customers boarded the transport I could find some agreement . It would be interesting to know if customers also paid the boatman for the trip.

More interesting is the fact that enforceable regulations against price gouging exist !

Karma is a bitch isn't it? Ridiculous high prices and i don't believe the manager story what they have to pay the boat. The lady admit the normal price was 150 baht but they charged 400 baht on the bill. This is the normal thai greadyness that will never ever stop.

I sat in a bar in soi sukumvit and i bougth 3 bottle of beer that should cost 210 baht.

When i asked for the bill the manager tried to charge me 2700 baht.I said no way.

He claimed i had bought lady drinks that i didn't do at all.I sat alone and refused to buy drinks to every lady asked me.The manager started to threaten me and i said i have to call my friend to bring me cash. Then i called my policefriend and he and other officers came to the bar.The manager realized he was in trouble. The police told him to see my bill and he had put old bills from other customers in my cup. Then he said he was just joking with me.Totally BS.The police told him to give me the bill i was supposed to pay and that was 210 baht.He get warned if this happens again they would close his bar and blacklisted him for future business. This idiot said to me i was not welcome in his bar again. When i pasted the bar after this case he looked another way when i walked in the soi.

Just another scam, but having said that, why order food at that price as it was clearly marked on the menu, also was the 900b per customer or per boat load ?

Happily you had a friend to help, but how many tourists are being scammed like this??? They should revoke his license immediately, as he has done it obvious not only by you.... and complaining that tourists don't come and asking for help because they don't make enough profit...

I visited there a few years ago, the whole place is a rip-off... food, vendors, river-side stall owners.

whatever you do don't set-foot in a boat for a tour..

As long as the prices are clearly indicated on the menu this is not a scam.

I have just shown my partner, as it happened to us on December 18th when we went there with family.

My family accepted and paid the prices; I refused, and we used the private van to take us to 7-Eleven to buy snacks. The prices were so extortionate.

They were even asking 80 baht for a 10 baht ice cream and 150 baht for a small can of Singha. I posted about the scam on TripAdvisor.

There was a menu, with NO PRICES attached.

On December 18th, the menus did not include prices due to multiple erasures, changes, and stickers that made everything unreadable.

Other menus displayed no prices, and the staff stated they had just been printed.

Crazy prices, even if there's meat in the dishes. However, if the prices are correctly displayed and people are still willing to order, then there's no room to complain.

December 18th, please see my other posts; it's worse than ever.

They had two menus: one was illegible due to multiple changes, and the other lacked sticker prices.

These bastards are ripping people off and are well aware of what they're doing.

Hello VIETNAM next year with family!

My family took the boat trip and paid 3,000 baht for the mini tour for four people.

After this, we were told the other trip was the elephants (my nephew said it was a waste of time; I didn't go), and they charged them an additional 3000 baht.

Talk about "where's a policeman when you need one". Well, there you go, the full troop including the ones with pips on the uniforms, all out sorting the price of an omelette.

Ha ha. I guess he picked on the wrong guy that night, fun to see justice being had.

That bar should be called out by name, let's shame them to the fullest extent possible.

They sound like prices at a crummy Thai restaurant in America, which is now the land of everything being over inflated in price. Thankful to be here, that's for sure.

Free market economy; by all means ensure that the authorities do not get involved (here as well). Let the tourists voice their concerns, vote with their feet on the eateries or possibly Thailand as a whole as a destination.

The rip-off of visitors is absolutely staggering and there are alternatives to the Land of Smiles ;-)

If any consolation , you are not alone in being ripped off . Has happened to me twice . One time in Koh Samui when I ordered a small beer and gave a 1000baht note to pay and got change from 100 baht . An argument ensued between me and the barman and then 3 Thai heavies suddenly appeared , so I put it down to experience . Next occasion was in Sukumvit , soi 4 , when after drinking 2 small beers at 120 baht each , the bill was 305 baht . When I challenged the bill they said it was a service charge and v.a.t. We went back to our hotel where it was 90 baht .

is it the authorities job to set prices? as long as prices are clearly displayed caveat emptor and all that.

if you're daft enough to go to a ridiculous tourist trap place in pretty much any country your going to pay inflated prices.

if pricing is misleading or the law is being broken then sure the authorities should step in.
