Protester Scales Iranian Embassy Balcony in London

Dramatic scenes unfolded in central London as a demonstrator climbed onto the balcony of the Iranian Embassy to replace the national flag with a historic opposition symbol.

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, a high-profile demonstration outside the Iranian Embassy in Kensington escalated when a protester scaled the building. Viral social media footage captured the man standing on the embassy’s balcony, where he removed the flag of the Islamic Republic and unfurled the "Lion and Sun" flag—a pre-1979 revolution symbol often used by groups opposing the current regime.

The incident occurred during a rally of approximately 1,000 people gathered to show solidarity with ongoing anti-government protests in Iran. The Metropolitan Police responded by deploying additional officers to the scene near Hyde Park. Authorities confirmed that two individuals were arrested: one for aggravated trespass and another for both aggravated trespass and assault on an emergency worker. Police are currently searching for a third suspect.

The London protest reflects the intensifying unrest within Iran, which began in late December 2024. These demonstrations, sparked by economic hardship and spiraling inflation, have evolved into a significant challenge to the Iranian government. Reports suggest that dozens of protesters have been killed in Iran, with thousands more detained amid a nationwide internet blackout.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer recently condemned the violence in Iran, urging Tehran to "exercise restraint." Meanwhile, the Iranian Embassy later shared an image on social media showing the official flag restored to its position, stating that "Iran’s flag is flying high." The Met Police remained on-site late into the evening to ensure the building’s security.

Key Takeaways

Security Breach: A protester scaled the Iranian Embassy in London, replacing the official flag with a pre-revolution symbol.

Police Action: The Metropolitan Police arrested two people for aggravated trespass and continue to monitor the area for further disorder.

Global Solidarity: The event was part of a larger international movement supporting Iranian citizens protesting against the regime's economic and social policies

Why do demonstrates always seem to pick London, to do their thing?

If they did it in their own countries they'd likely be stoned to death.

You can do anything in London (as long as you are not a right leaning indigenous Brit).

An end to the persecution of the Picts should be the government's #1 priority.

Because you're watching and reading English language news. Watch German language news, and read about protests in German speaking cities.

You're right, Jonny. The Dumnonii get a rough deal as well.

Cowards. If they care about their country they’d go back and fight rather than live in uk.

Well because if they went back to Iran, they would be arrested immediately and face interrogation, detention, or worse — potentially even charges carrying the death penalty.

The Iranian regime has a long, well-documented history of targeting dual nationals, exiles, and diaspora critics upon return, often using airports as the entry point for arbitrary detentions. This pattern has intensified during periods of unrest, including the current wave (which began December 28, 2025, and is now in its third week with hundreds killed and thousands arrested).

Well enemies of state are usually treated as such by any country. If you choose to leave your homeland you should leave the dramas behind out of respect to the host country. Removing a legitimate flag from an official building and replacing it with an illegitimate flag is considered illegal by the host country.
