Two earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.2 were detected off the northern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on January 13, 2026. The tremors were felt in parts of southern Thailand, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue alerts. These seismic events occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and were recorded several hours apart.

The first quake struck at 1:50 am, approximately 435 kilometers southwest of Phuket's Mueang district. A second quake occurred at 7:53 am, located around 653 kilometers southwest of Satun's Mueang district. Given Sumatra's position along active fault lines, such seismic activity is relatively common, according to Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division.

Experts have highlighted the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness in the region due to its susceptibility to earthquakes. The Meteorological Department assured the public that updates would be provided if necessary, although there has been no immediate report of damage or injuries.

Looking forward, local authorities remain vigilant in assessing potential risks and will provide guidance should any additional seismic activity occur. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed through official updates and advisories, reported The Nation.
