Vietnamese authorities have arrested the CEO of Halong Canned Food JSC, Truong Sy Toan, following the discovery of over 130 tons of diseased pork in the company's production processes. Police in Hai Phong detained Toan on January 10, citing involvement in the collection and storage of pork infected with African swine fever. Three additional employees from the Quality Management Department were also taken into custody for their roles in approving the substandard pork.

The investigation began in September 2025, when Hai Phong's Economic Police Division intercepted vehicles carrying 1.2 metric tons of unidentified pork. Tests revealed the meat was contaminated with African swine fever. As the probe expanded, police found a substantial 130 metric tons of infected pork stored at Halong Canned Food's facilities. Consequently, more than 1.7 metric tons had already been processed into pâté, affecting roughly 14,000 cans.

Alongside the pâté, other products like crispy spring rolls and special spring rolls, totaling over 7,000 kg, were found contaminated with the virus. Additionally, lab tests showed that over 21,000 kg of frozen pork and chicken skin contained Salmonella, a bacteria known to cause gastrointestinal issues. The contaminated pork originated from suppliers in Hung Yen Province, lacking proper documentation.

This alarming case led to criminal proceedings against Toan and eight others linked to food safety violations after a four-month investigation. All adulterated products and meat were destroyed by November 2025. Experts now emphasize the critical need for stringent food quality checks and tracing systems to prevent similar occurrences.

Authorities continue their thorough investigation to determine detailed responsibilities and potential breaches of the law. As the case unfolds, it raises significant concerns about food safety and regulatory enforcement across the region.

Key Takeaways

  • CEO Truong Sy Toan arrested over diseased pork in food production.

  • Over 130 tons of infected meat and products were destroyed.

  • Investigation continues to assign responsibility and prevent future breaches.

Pork infected with African Swine Fever (ASF) is a major threat to pig populations, causing high mortality, but it's not a direct health risk to humans, though consuming it is strongly discouraged as it can spread the virus further and proper cooking kills the virus. Infected meat might show red/purple skin blotches, internal hemorrhages, and bluish-purple legs; it's unsafe and should be reported, with strict controls needed on illegally imported products to prevent virus spread.
