Security authorities have confirmed evidence linking the BRN (Barisan Revolusi Nasional) insurgent group to coordinated arson and bombing attacks at 11 petrol stations across Thailand’s southern border provinces, prompting heightened security measures and an urgent manhunt for those responsible. The attacks disrupted local communities and raised concerns over public safety and economic impact in the affected areas.

The update was announced on 13 January 2026 at 10.00am during a joint press briefing at the Public Relations Centre of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) Region 4 Forward Command at Sirindhorn Camp. Officials said security levels had been raised to the highest setting, with integrated intelligence operations involving police and military units to prevent further incidents and reassure the public.

The incidents form part of ongoing unrest in the southern border provinces, where authorities have long faced sporadic violence linked to separatist movements. According to ISOC Region 4 Forward Command spokesperson Colonel Yutthanam Phetmuang, security forces have intensified patrols, established additional checkpoints and control points, tightened border inspections and planned designated safe routes to maintain detailed area control and public confidence.

Police Colonel Thatchapichai Chanyawaranon, Deputy Commander of the Southern Border Provinces Investigation Division, said forensic teams had completed examinations at all 11 sites. Investigators recovered improvised explosive devices concealed in gas cylinders, fire extinguishers and metal boxes, with detonation mechanisms using timers and remote controls. Spent bullet casings found at the Tha Sap subdistrict site were identified as being linked to the BRN group, with further in-depth forensic analysis under way to trace and apprehend suspects for prosecution.

Authorities warned that such attacks undermine the local economy and place additional hardship on residents. Lieutenant Colonel Cherd Aksornrat, Director of the Office for Development Promotion and Security Support at the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre, outlined compensation measures approved under the 31 May 2005 Cabinet resolution. Property damage assessments are expected to be completed within two to four weeks, with advance compensation of up to 50 per cent to be paid initially to ease immediate hardship, while cases exceeding 100 million baht during a caretaker government period must be submitted to the Election Commission in line with legal procedures.

ISOC Region 4 Forward Command strongly condemned the violence and urged those with differing views to pursue peaceful dialogue instead. Members of the public were asked to report suspicious activity via the 1341 hotline or directly to the Fourth Army Region commander on 061-173-2999, available 24 hours a day.

Komchadluek reported that security agencies said investigations would continue alongside expanded preventive measures to deter further attacks. Officials stressed that maintaining unified communication and cooperation with communities would be central to restoring stability in the southern border provinces.
