Ho Chi Minh City plans to expand its metro network to 187 km by 2030, adding five new routes to the existing Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien line. This initiative aims to enhance the city's public transport infrastructure and meet increasing commuter demand. The expansion is part of a strategic move to accommodate up to 60% of the city's transportation needs by 2045.

The expansion follows the successful launch of HCMC's first metro line from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien in December 2024, a project that took 12 years to complete. The city plans to incorporate special mechanisms and preferential policies to expedite procedures and support development. The first phase will see new lines running from Tham Luong to Thu Thiem and an extended route connecting Binh Duong New City to Suoi Tien.

The ambitious plan underscores the city's strategy to mobilize diverse resources, with public funding playing a primary role. Experts note this development as a significant step in enhancing inter-regional connectivity and easing urban congestion. Authorities expect the metro to play a crucial role in the economic and infrastructural growth of Vietnam's largest city.

Looking forward, the city plans to expand further with an additional eight lines between 2030 and 2035, resulting in a 462 km network. By 2045, the network is expected to grow to 700 km, featuring advanced transit-oriented models. Construction of metro line No. 2 begins soon, with estimated costs at VND47.8 trillion and completion expected by 2030, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Ho Chi Minh City plans a 187 km metro expansion by 2030.

  • The expansion aims to meet up to 60% of transport needs by 2045.

  • Initial groundwork on metro line No. 2 will begin this month.

They've come late to the party, let's see if they can actually speed up things as outlined.

Yeah, lots of positivity happening with this, I hope it all happens on time and safely. I'd imagine the government will want this to happen (and most of the population), and they'll be looking at some of the failures around the region on big public transport initiatives as a cursory warning to themselves.

War does tend to make one late for the party. 🙂
