Israeli Strike in Gaza Kills Three Journalists, Sparks Outrage

Featured Replies

In a devastating escalation, an Israeli strike in central Gaza has resulted in the deaths of three Palestinian journalists. Identified as Mohammed Salah Qashta, Anas Ghneim, and Abdul Raouf Shaat, these journalists were reportedly working for an Egyptian relief organization and were killed when their vehicle was struck in the al-Zahra area. The car was clearly marked with the humanitarian group's logo, emphasizing the mission's non-combatant nature.

The Israeli military justified the attack by claiming they targeted several suspects operating a Hamas-affiliated drone, which allegedly posed an imminent threat to their troops. This incident underscores the fragile nature of the current ceasefire, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Adding to the tragic toll, Gaza's health ministry reported that eight other individuals, including two children, were killed by Israeli artillery and gunfire on the same day. In a separate incident, three people, including a young boy, were killed by Israeli tank fire, and a teenager and a woman were reported killed in Khan Younis.

The Israeli military also noted that a "terrorist" was killed when they crossed the Yellow Line—a demarcation still under Israeli control per the ceasefire terms. This complex landscape of violence and ceasefire breaches highlights the ongoing instability in the region.

Hamas condemned the journalist killings as a "dangerous escalation," arguing that it constituted a blatant violation of the ceasefire. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate expressed outrage, labeling the incident a war crime and accusing Israel of attempting to silence Palestinian media. French news agency AFP, for whom Shaat was a regular contributor, expressed deep sadness and demanded a thorough investigation.

The Committee to Protect Journalists joined in denouncing the attack, underscoring that Israel, with its advanced targeting capabilities, has an obligation to protect journalists under international law. The CPJ notes this conflict as the deadliest for journalists, with over 206 media workers killed since the outbreak of hostilities.

Local journalists remain the primary source of on-the-ground reporting in Gaza as Israel restricts foreign press access. This measure necessitates reliance on local voices, which face tremendous risk amid the conflict.

This escalation follows the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage, prompting Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Since then, Gaza's health ministry reports that over 71,550 individuals have died due to ongoing military actions.

As global attention centers on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the killing of journalists foregrounds the issue of press freedom and safety in war zones, with international calls for accountability and protection measures growing louder.

Key Takeaways

  • Three journalists killed in Gaza, highlighting ongoing risks for media personnel.

  • Incident draws international attention to ceasefire stability and press safety.

  • Hamas and journalist organizations condemn attacks, demanding accountability.

So, were they journalists or were they working for an Egyptian relief organization?

Absurd comment and purely antisemitic. And you don't think Hamas poses as journalists to stage this? Wake up.

Hyperbole doesn't help.

Surely the whole point of a ceasfire is you don't continue to bomb the other place when you feel something is going on.

Otherwise it's not a ceasfire is it ?

You might want to look up the definition of anti - semitism before you make such terrible accusations:

Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.

However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.”

You beat me to it, but I prefer not to reference the IHRA, I prefer the definition of antisemitism approved by over 200 scholars, the Jerusalem Definition on Antisemitism. It allows comparison between Nazi Germany and Israel as not being antisemitic.

Well, I guess it just doesn`t matter to them as against their better knowledge they will keep trying to label you as an anti-semite and even have the brass neck to call for legal charges while the prime minister of the apartheid state they fiercely defend is flying zigzag routes to avoid countries which might have the obligation to arrest and drag him to The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The days that you can use the antisemitic card when someone says something you dislike are well past.

There is help for 'persecution complex'.

It's anti Israel, and it's true.

Eh ? ... and who gets to decide if Hamas have surrendered or not? No where in the agreement on the ceasfire does it say Hamas has to go away (albeit they should).

Hamas HAVE to surrender and disarm .

The war cannot end until they do .

Cannot move forward with Hamas still armed and in power

The Ceasefire didn't mention Hamas having to disbandon - as i say they should though as they're a horrid organisation.

But You can't just have Isreal policing the ceasefire

The war will continue then .

Israel will not end the war until Hamas have surrendered

No, it is widely accepted that Hamas uses people who may work as "journalists" or who pose as them to carry out set tasks and missions. In this case, it seems that the deceased were operating a drone that was overflying the Israeli zone, which Hamas is not denying.

And if the 3 were working for an Egyptian "aid" organization, they were not working as journalists.

Looks like a very one sided ceasefire to me.

I agree, Israel should not police the the ceasefire. This is why there is supposed to be an international enforcement group to take up policing and oversight duties. The UN has given it a mandate to act. The Palestinian Authority wants it to get going. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2025/11/17/live-hamas-rejects-foreign-guardianship-of-gaza-before-un-vote

The problem is Hamas. The force contributing countries of Indonesia, Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, Bangladesh and Morocco are ready to go once Hamas stops threatening their personnel. I think they have all lost patience and want Hamas gone, so at some point there will be a showdown.

The 30 minutes of shooting had been edited down to 59 seconds. The responsibility of the IDF was questioned after multiple investigations that showed the video had been heavily edited and that the deaths were more likely caused by Palestinian Arab fire. The Journalist's own editor stated that after her review no one could say who had fired the lethal bullets. The deceased's body was claimed by the Palestinian Arab family and the lethal bullets were never provided for analysis despite the common procedure to examine spent bullets to determine origin.

The Jerusalem definition of Anti Semitism ;

The declaration has been criticized on multiple grounds: A common criticism is that by seeking to rebut the IHRA definition, the JDA undermines consensus and sets back the fight against antisemitism. The declaration has also been criticized for sidelining the issue of antisemitism by seeking to engulf it in the fight against all other forms of racism and discrimination. Its reputability has been questioned, given that a number of its signers have been accused of antisemitism.
