Immigration police in Songkhla, working with customs officers at the Padang Besar checkpoint, arrested a Thai driver for allegedly smuggling two Myanmar nationals into the country using a concealed compartment in his vehicle on 26 January 2026. The discovery was made during a joint inspection on the inbound side of the Thai–Malaysian border, preventing the illegal entry of undocumented migrants into Thailand.

The operation was carried out under the direction of Pol Lt Gen Phanumart Boonyalak, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, alongside senior officers including Pol Maj Gen Phanthana Nuchanart, Pol Maj Gen Natthakorn Praphayont, and Pol Maj Gen Chutharet Yingyongdamrongkul. Immigration officers from Region 6 and Songkhla Immigration worked in coordination with Padang Besar Customs, led by checkpoint chief Harin Horwang, to establish an integrated inspection and interception point.

During the operation, officers stopped a white Isuzu extended-cab pickup truck bearing Songkhla registration plates. The driver, identified as Mr Muhammad, aged 31, a Thai national, reportedly displayed suspicious behaviour, prompting a search of the vehicle. Officers discovered two Myanmar nationals hidden in a specially modified secret compartment beneath the rear seat behind the driver.

Questioning revealed that Mr Muhammad had allegedly collected the two migrants from Malaysia, despite them having no passports or travel documents. He reportedly agreed to transport them to Padang Besar market for a fee of 200 Malaysian ringgit per person, or approximately 1,500 baht each. The two Myanmar nationals admitted they had no passports and stated they intended to travel onwards to Chonburi province to seek work.

Mr Muhammad was informed of his arrest on charges of bringing undocumented migrants into the Kingdom or assisting and facilitating their illegal entry. The offence carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 baht. The two migrants were charged with entering and remaining in the Kingdom without permission.

NBT reported that authorities stated that all suspects, along with the seized vehicle, were taken into custody and handed over to investigators at Padang Besar Police Station for further legal proceedings. The case forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen border security and disrupt human smuggling networks along Thailand’s southern frontier.
