A newborn baby was found dead, wrapped in cloth and abandoned in a forested area behind a market in Prachin Buri province, prompting a police investigation into suspected infanticide. The discovery has shocked local residents and led authorities to secure the scene and begin forensic examinations to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

The body was discovered in a eucalyptus grove beside a road behind the market in Ban Nong Man Pla, Moo 8, Hua Wa subdistrict, Si Maha Phot district, Prachin Buri. Villagers alerted police after noticing a strong odour and officers from Rabo Phai Police Station arrived with volunteers from the Sawang Bamphen Thammasathan Rescue Foundation, Ban Khok Khwang point. The infant’s body was found inside a green plastic carrier bag, wrapped in a sarong and a traditional cloth.

Police said the remains showed signs of decomposition, with maggots and flies present, indicating the baby had been dead for approximately two to three days. A short knife with a green handle was found about five metres from where the body was located. Officers cordoned off the area with police tape while awaiting a duty doctor and forensic officers to conduct a detailed examination.

According to preliminary assessments, the baby was a newborn who had died shortly after birth. Investigators are working to determine whether the child was born alive and the precise cause of death, pending forensic results. The body has been removed for a post-mortem examination as part of the legal process.

Residents told police that the site where the body was found is close to a large factory within an industrial estate. The area also contains dormitory accommodation for migrant workers, with housing located about 300 metres from the scene. Many of the workers in the vicinity are from neighbouring Myanmar.

Police said they suspect the baby may have been abandoned by a female Myanmar migrant worker employed in the nearby industrial estate, but stressed that this remains an initial line of inquiry. Officers plan to check how many female migrant workers in the area may have been pregnant and to question relevant individuals to establish the facts.

Daily News reported that authorities said legal action will be taken once the investigation identifies the mother and clarifies the circumstances of the birth and death. Police emphasised that the inquiry will rely on forensic evidence and witness statements before any charges are brought.
