Pattaya nightlife shuts down as election alcohol ban begins

Pattaya’s party strips went quiet as the election alcohol ban kicked in over the weekend

Nightlife venues in Pattaya shut down on February 1 as Thailand’s election-related alcohol restrictions took effect. The dry period began on January 31 in connection with advance voting held on February 1 ahead of the February 8 general election. Reports described normally busy entertainment zones as subdued, with bars and clubs going dark for the day. Many visitors shifted to the beachfront instead, where the atmosphere was calmer and more family-oriented. Authorities framed the temporary ban as part of broader efforts to keep the voting period orderly. The next round of closures is scheduled for February 7 at 6pm until February 8 6pm, and that will be a nationwide policy.
