Three Thai men have been arrested in Saraburi province for transporting 14 illegal Chinese migrants in two vehicles. The suspects, Chakrapol, 44; Jirawat, 21; and Krisada, 44, face charges for harboring and aiding illegal migrants. The migrants were detained for entering Thailand without permission, and two vehicles, along with five mobile phones, were seized.

The arrests occurred after highway police noticed reckless driving on Mittraphap Road, leading to the discovery of the migrants. Chakrapol drove a Chevrolet pickup with one passenger, while Krisada drove a Toyota van carrying the remaining group. Both vehicles were taken to Saraburi highway police station for document checks, confirming the migrants lacked valid travel documents.

The Thai drivers admitted they knowingly transported the illegal migrants, having been contacted by a Laotian man, "Tam," via Facebook. The transport started in Pho Sai district, Ubon Ratchathani, and was meant to end in Wang Noi district, Ayutthaya. They reportedly received 5,000 baht per person for the job.

The Chinese nationals confessed to crossing into Thailand via a long-tail boat over the Mekong River, lacking passports or legal documents. As the investigation continues at Muang police station, further legal proceedings are anticipated, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Three Thai men were charged with smuggling 14 Chinese migrants.

If you're doing something illegal isn't it then best to keep a low profile?? 🤔

My question is how they can tell "reckless" driving from normal Thai driving?

"Illegal" only because Thailand does not have a formal domestic legal framework for asylum, as it is not a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention. Asylum seekers are treated as illegal immigrants under the Immigration Act, risking detention and deportation, though some are permitted to stay via Ministry of Interior discretion.

There is no official Thai law that differentiates refugees from other migrants.

What do the migrants say about their entry into Thailand?
