An investigation is under way after a wild elephant died during a translocation operation on Tuesday night, prompting public concern about wildlife welfare. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation confirmed the death and said preliminary findings pointed to aspiration of food as the likely cause. A full necropsy is being conducted to determine the precise circumstances of the death.

The elephant, a male named Sido Hoo- Pub aged between 15 and 20 years, was being relocated from Khon Kaen to Loei province. He originally lived in the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary in Loei before migrating into agricultural areas of Phu Wiang district in Khon Kaen. His presence near communities had raised safety concerns.

According to the department, Seedor Hu Pub frequently wandered close to residential areas and had fatally attacked a local resident. Following this incident, the Administrative Court of Khon Kaen ordered that the elephant be moved back to the Phu Luang sanctuary. The translocation was scheduled to take place between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Officials said the operation aimed to protect local residents while returning the elephant to a suitable natural habitat. The department stated that the relocation followed international standards, including the establishment of multi-agency command centres and the deployment of experienced veterinarians and animal care specialists. Anaesthetic dosages were calculated based on the elephant’s weight and condition, with vital signs monitored throughout.

The department added that the elephant was positioned carefully to support its respiratory system during transport. Despite these precautions, the animal suffered a sudden physiological crisis shortly after the convoy began moving at 10.50pm. Veterinary teams immediately stopped the convoy and attempted emergency medical intervention.

Efforts to save the elephant were unsuccessful and Sido Hoo-Pub was pronounced dead at the scene. The department said it reported the incident publicly on Wednesday as public mourning and concern spread over the welfare of wild animals involved in such operations. Officials emphasised that the incident was unexpected.

In response, the department has appointed a committee of experts to review every stage of the translocation. The panel will examine planning, medical procedures and on-site decision-making. Findings from the review are expected to inform future wildlife management practices.

Bangkokpost reported that “Managing human–elephant conflict is a highly complex task requiring extreme caution and lessons from this incident will be used to refine operational protocols to better ensure public safety and wildlife welfare,” the department said. “We thank the public for understanding and reaffirm our commitment to responsible, transparent, science-based and ethical wildlife conservation practices.”
