Senate President Pro Tempore raises concerns over allegiance in territorial disputes

Amid rising tensions over the West Philippine Sea, Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo "Ping" Lacson cautioned against Filipinos who may betray national interests for personal gains. Without naming names, Lacson alluded to heated congressional debates on China's actions in the region.

Lacson emphasized the risk of “homegrown traitors” in intelligence operations, describing it as 'recruitment in place.' Recent discussions focused on the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) in Palawan, a territory with contested claims.

Controversially, Sen. Rodante Marcoleta suggested parts of KIG may not fall under the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). However, he later clarified his statements, which some saw as conceding territory.

The Philippine Coast Guard's spokesperson, Commodore Jay Tarriela, invited Marcoleta to join a Maritime Domain Awareness flight to the KIG, highlighting the area's significance to national security.

Maritime law expert Atty. Jay Batongbacal criticized Marcoleta’s remarks as harmful to the nation's position, potentially reinforcing China's claims. The controversy has spurred accusations within the House of Representatives over perceived allegiances to China.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez accused House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan of defending China, igniting further debate. This comes amid a backdrop of tensions between Philippine and Chinese officials over the territorial waters.

Key Takeaways

  • Lacson warns against betraying national interests in sea dispute.
