Herzog Faces Mixed Reception in Australia

Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrives in Australia at a deeply divisive time. Invited by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Herzog's visit aims to show solidarity with a grieving Jewish community after a horrific massacre at a Hanukkah festival. However, protests are planned nationwide, labeling Herzog a war criminal.

Albanese’s gesture comes after 15 people were killed near Sydney, and his administration stresses social cohesion. Yet, Herzog's association with Israel's controversial actions in Gaza has ignited public anger. Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasizes the visit's focus on supporting the mourning community.

Protests organized in over 30 cities target Herzog's state visit, demanding accountability for the conflict in Gaza. In Sydney, pro-Palestinian activists plan significant gatherings despite government-imposed restrictions. "We will be there in huge numbers for a peaceful protest," stated Josh Lees from the Palestinian Action Group.

Jewish communities broadly support Herzog's presence, claiming his visit brings much-needed comfort. Alex Ryvchin of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry calls Herzog a "patriot" with a unique ability to empathize with communities in their darkest times. Despite this, Herzog’s role remains largely ceremonial, separate from Israel's military decisions.

Controversy surrounds Herzog as a UN inquiry accused him of inciting genocide, a charge he strongly denies. Protected by diplomatic immunity, Herzog faces no legal threat in Australia, as confirmed by its authorities. However, Doron Almog, part of Herzog’s delegation, lacks such protection, leading to additional legal scrutiny.

Herzog intends to address misinformation about Israel during his visit, but his presence draws significant criticism. The Jewish Council of Australia accuses the government of using Jewish grief for political purposes. An open letter in major newspapers echoes this sentiment, stating Herzog's presence exacerbates antisemitic tensions.

Since the Bondi attacks, over 3,700 anti-Jewish incidents have been recorded, intensifying fears within Jewish communities. In response, the government has enforced stricter laws on hate speech and firearms. Herzog's visit, occurring amidst these tensions, raises questions about its impact on the country's social fabric.

Police negotiate with activists to ensure peaceful protests, maintaining compromise locations to prevent escalations. The political and social anxieties surrounding Herzog's visit highlight Australia’s broader struggles with Middle Eastern conflicts.

As Herzog arrives, Australian society finds itself at a crossroads, navigating the challenges of supporting its Jewish citizens while addressing the broader implications of international controversies. The coming days may prove pivotal in shaping the nation's response to global political dynamics.

Key Takeaways

  • Herzog's visit ignites widespread protests.

  • Reactions underscore deep divisions over Gaza.

  • Herzog's diplomatic immunity prevents legal actions.

"War criminal." Its the other way around. Israel is the effect not the cause of this mess. Hamas planned this for years by building those tunnels and they deliberately held onto hostages as they knew Israel would react to no end. All the while, Aljazeera there filming and editing everything to garner world pity. Don't forget you are likely a non believer in Islam, next on their list.

Rubbish. If the Israeli settlers hadn't been stealing land for decades Hamas would have never gotten into power in the first place.

The Gaza genocide has made the Zionist state an international pariah.

That fact is brought to attention every time an Israeli official visits another country.

Agreed. Still, the visit of the president, the top diplomat, is an important and imo positive signal.

A "positive signal" for whom?

Surely not the women, children, and non-combatants who are dying in the rubble of Gaza or being driven from their homes in the West Bank.

While a photo of him signing an Israeli artillery shell provides a clear image of support for the war in Gaza, his comments in the direct aftermath of the October 7 terrorist attack have caused even more controversy.

What kind of monster signs a bomb to protect his political career?!?

Herzog: “First of all, we have to understand there’s a state, there’s a state, in a way, that was a, that has built a machine of evil right at our doorstep. It’s an entire nation out there that is responsible. It’s not true this rhetoric about civilians were not aware, not involved, it’s absolutely not true. They could have risen up. They could have fought against that evil regime which took over Gaza in a coup d’etat, murdering their family members who were in Fatah.”

“…no excuse for murdering innocent civilians”—why didn’t Herzog speak up when it would have made a difference? Why doesn’t he speak up now?

Citizens’ arrest. That statement speaks for the man. Feting him is complicity by Australia. If those charged by the ICC don’t want to be arrested, stay home. Bondi Beach has nothing to do with this visit. Perhaps Israel hopes Australia will buy more of their weapons and spyware.

And what will Herzog say about Australia’s diplomatic recognition of Palestine and advocacy for a two-state solution?

Much of the [Israeli] coverage has focused on the statements of the left-wing Jewish Council of Australia (JCA), which has vocally opposed the president's visit. The country's opposition leader, Yair Lapid, described the JCA as "extremists".

We all grieve Bondi. Herzog’s grief doesn’t weigh any more than anyone else.

He’ll get his fair day in court, unlike the Palestinian people. Trust the law, eh. It will soon be spring in The Hague.

Has Herzog been charged by the ICC?

No, just accused by multiple UN honchos and agencies. "Complicit in genocide" could be leveled against all Israeli politicians and soldiers.

Who were the first inhabitants of the area by hundreds of years? Land given back numerous times like the Golan mountains, yet the muslims continued taking pot shots. Read history.

Indeed, it could.

They have incriminated themselves by their recorded statements and bloody deeds.

The destruction of Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank bear witness to their guilt.

As did the Israelis. Indeed, history. Who were those Israelites? Were they really the founders of the Jewish diaspora, in Ethiopia and Eastern Europe? Judaism is, in fact, thousands of years old, Islam about half that. But Palestine was conquered which is why Palestine is Muslim today. Regardless, both Jews and Palestinians lived as peaceful neighbours before Zionist agitators. Isn't that better?
