A Russian tourist has died after being struck by a smart bus while crossing a coastal road in Phuket, prompting a police investigation and notification of diplomatic authorities. The collision occurred in a busy tourist area and resulted in fatal injuries despite emergency medical treatment.

The incident took place at approximately 15:45 on 9 February 2026 on Beach Road in the Karon subdistrict of Muang district, Phuket. Police said the victim was critically injured at the scene and later died in hospital.

According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Aeksak Khwanwan, an investigating officer at Karon Police Station, officers were alerted to a vehicle-pedestrian collision involving a foreign national. Emergency responders from Karon municipality provided first aid before the injured man was transported to Chalong Hospital.

The victim was identified as Aleksandr Bondarenko, 39, a Russian national. Hospital staff later confirmed that he died from his injuries after arrival. At the scene, police found a bus parked by the roadside, with the driver still present. The driver was identified as Santichai Chatree, 38, who was taken to Karon Police Station for questioning.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the bus was travelling along Beach Road when Bondarenko, who had been standing by the roadside with friends, suddenly attempted to cross the road. Police said the driver was unable to stop in time, resulting in the collision.

Santichai underwent a breathalyser test, which showed no alcohol in his system. Police stated that footage from the vehicle and nearby CCTV cameras is being reviewed as part of the investigation.

Authorities have notified the Russian embassy of the death. Police said legal proceedings will continue in accordance with Thai law, and the victim’s body will be released to relatives.

Khoasod reported that the incident adds to ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety in busy tourist areas of Phuket, particularly along coastal roads with high volumes of traffic. Police have not announced whether any charges will be filed at this stage, pending the outcome of further investigation.
