A refined oil spill near Phuket is unlikely to impact local islands or coral reefs, with the slick moving out to open waters. The Pollution Control Department (PCD) stated on February 10 that current spill models show the refined petroleum drifting southwest, away from critical coastal ecosystems.

Over the weekend, the Panama-flagged Sealloyd Arc sank about three nautical miles south of Laem Phromthep while traveling from Malaysia to Bangladesh. The incident caused all 297 containers on board to submerge with the vessel. Despite initial concerns, PCD's Water Quality Management Division head, Chanan Tiranarat, noted the minimal risk to marine life, emphasizing continuous monitoring due to potential changes in wind and sea conditions.

Refined petroleum disperses and dissolves more readily than crude oil, lessening environmental hazards as compared to the 2013 Ao Prao Beach crude spill. Authorities are prepared to use chemical dispersants immediately if needed, under a protocol requiring post-use reporting. This proactive approach is coordinated with the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources and the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre.

At the time of sinking, the Sealloyd Arc was carrying 98 tonnes of heavy fuel oil and 32 tonnes of marine diesel oil, raising concerns about sensitive reef areas. Although the risk remains low, authorities are discussing salvage operations; however, strong sea currents have hindered initial efforts.

Looking forward, continued monitoring and prepared interventions are set to manage any evolving risks. The situation underscores the importance of swift response capabilities and coordinated efforts to protect marine environment, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Refined oil spill off Phuket poses minimal risk to local islands.

  • The PCD monitors the situation, with dispersant use pre-approved.

  • Salvage operations are discussed, but strong currents affect progress.
