German Chancellor Friedrich Merz eyes European nuclear shield

Featured Replies

Chancellor Merz has delivered this evening (Thai time) his speech at the Munich Security Conference. Among the many topics discussed was the European rearmament, aimed at ensuring the continent's freedom and independence.

Nothing seems off the table. Not even the creation of a European nuclear deterrent leveraging the existing French Force de frappe, expanded to cover the whole European Union and modernized.

Reuters reports: "German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday that he was holding talks with French president Emmanuel Macron over creating a joint European nuclear deterrent as urged on Europe to rebuild its relationship with its U.S. ally.

"We're not doing this by writing NATO off. We're doing it by building a strong, self-supporting European pillar within the alliance," he said in a speech opening the Munich Security Conference."

Not only the European Union countries, but also Japan and Korea would do well to listen carefully to the German Chancellor's words.

The United States has become an unknown quantity, embarked on a trajectory with no discernible destination.

It is important for its allies to be prepared to face any situation. Full rearmament will take years. In the meantime, deploying a credible nuclear deterrent can be done reasonably quickly, thus creating a deterrent strong enough to contain the most serious threats, wherever they come from.

Are there micro nukes able to safely take out enemy forces such as at Cologne cathedral on a NYE? I would have thought SWAT teams better suited for removing Europes greatest threat to its existence?

Germans seem to have forgotten NATO policy was to wait for Soviet tanks to pass through the Fulda Gap, and only then nuke 'em.

"Oui monsieur, ve had to nuke ze Chermains in order to safe zem!"
