Vietnam is projected to rank fourth globally and first in Southeast Asia for pork consumption by 2025, according to a report from the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department of Domestic Market Management and Development. The average consumption per person is expected to be nearly 39 kg, indicating the significance of pork in the Vietnamese diet and its influence on the nation's Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Historically, Vietnam's pork consumption has seen a consistent rise. In 2021, the average consumption was about 30 kg per person, which increased to 37 kg in 2024, and is reaching 39 kg by 2025. Pork represents over 63% of the consumption structure for livestock products in Vietnam, underscoring its essential role in the country’s food economy and impact on the CPI.

As the Lunar New Year (Tet) approaches, pork demand is anticipated to increase by 10-15%. Despite potential supply challenges posed by natural disasters and disease, the country's pig population remains robust at 31.4 million, ensuring adequate supply for Tet celebrations. The livestock industry produced 8.6 million tonnes of meat last year, with pork accounting for 5.4 million tonnes.

Pham Kim Dang from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reassured that the current pig supply is sufficient for upcoming demands. However, pork prices, currently at VND71,000-74,000 ($2.73-2.85) per kg, remain high despite recent declines. Experts attribute price fluctuations to speculative trading and market psychology, with notable peaks recorded at VND81,000 per kg earlier this year.

Nguyen Xuan Duong of the Vietnam Livestock Association emphasizes that pork's high meat supply proportion makes it a crucial item in the consumer basket. Therefore, rising pork prices can significantly impact household budgets and the national CPI, illustrating the item’s broader economic implications, reported VN Express.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam is set to be Southeast Asia's leader in pork consumption by 2025.

  • Pork prices remain high, affecting consumer purchasing power and CPI.

  • Adequate pork supply is anticipated for the Tet holiday despite past challenges.

That is surprising. I thought the Vietnamese were big beef (the famous Pho is almost always with beef) and chicken eaters, not so much pork.
