FATCA COMMON REPORTING STANDARD - Information required - SMS received

Featured Replies

Received SMS from Krungthai Bank asking to give information for FATCA, Common Reporting Standard. Presume they will ask if am Thai Resident ?

Details of my UK passport or address ? Do they send this information to HMRC directly or via Thai Tax Office ? Is there any limit of amount over which information is exchanged or all foreign passport holder information is exchanged irrespective

of money amount here ?

Any advice, anyone has supplied to Thai banks, outcome. All information advice is helpful and thank in advance.

I received the same sms about 2 weeks ago.Showed them my passport and bankbook and answered some questions re my phone number address and marital status and they took a photo.

I seem to remember doing this FATCAT thing a couple of years ago . I've since changed my phone # . Would it be worthwhile going into a branch to check what's happening? I thought this would be a done once and forget thing , not every couple of years.

The SMS you received refers to both FATCA & CRS.

FATCA is for US citizens.

CRS is for other countries (citizens) which includes Oz & Thailand.

FATCA and CRS are international tax compliance standards requiring financial institutions to report customer account information to tax authorities to combat tax evasion. FATCA (U.S. law) focuses on identifying U.S. persons with foreign accounts, while CRS (global standard) covers residents of participating countries, allowing for automatic exchange of information

The United States does not participate in the OECD's Common Reporting Standard (CRS) for the automatic exchange of financial account information. Instead, the U.S. relies on its own legal framework, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which requires foreign financial institutions to report data on U.S. persons directly to the IRS

I also received this SMS from Krungthai. Went to the nearest branch with my Passport and had to fill in a 4 page form. FACTA is a requirement by the USA givernment. Basically you have to swear that you have absolutely no connection with USA. And since I pay taxes in Thailand and have a Thai tax id number, made it much easier with no further scrutiny.

Correction: FATCA is for U.S. persons (U.S. citizens + U.S. resident aliens who do meet the green card or substantial presence test.)

I received the SMS late last Wednesday afternoon.

Went to my local KrungThai Bank on Thursday morning - it was already half full of farangs (many with Thai partners), there were more Thai staff at the bank than Thai customers!! Waited a long time in a very very slow moving queue.

Number called. Go to the bank officer, show her the message, explain that I filled out the form etc. last year, handed over bankbook and passport. The bank officer next to the one serving me, said that the message was sent out to "everyone". The bank officer serving me said that all my details were correct and up to date. Did my smiling thank yous and wais, and walked out - Thai efficiency at its best.

What a total wast of my time and putting more pressure on the staff, for those of us who have already completed all the required procedures.

I got the same from Krung Thai and rushed to the bank, and they said just to forget about it.

I didn't get the SMS , but KTB don't have my current phone no. , so that's not a surprise. I called in yesterday to let them have my new no. I mentioned the CRS thing so they asked me to fill in the forms with my UK TIN . The lady said it has to be done every year . Not sure what happens if you don't do it ....probably nothing, but better to err on the safe side.

Haven't paid any IT since 1991, and still don't with LTR and mainly income from UN, but I worry they'll invent some toxic rule where you must pay IT at least in one country. Hope I'll die before.
