Renewed my 5 years Thai Driving Licence at Chatuchak – March 2026

Just sharing my experience renewing my Thai driving licence at Chatuchak yesterday.

This was my third 5-year renewal.

I made an appointment a few weeks ago for 2:00pm. I arrived early at 1:10pm and managed to get parking after a few minutes – the security guard helped me find a spot (gave him 50 baht for the help).

Went inside and they actually took me straight away as they had empty spots from the previous round.

Documents I used:

  • Pink Thai ID card for foreigners

  • Yellow house book

  • My expired Thai driving licence

  • Medical certificate from a clinic

After the document check they sent me up to the 2nd floor, where they organised the paperwork and gave me the forms for the tests.

Then upstairs to the 3rd floor for the four tests. All the equipment looks new now and the instructions were much clearer than before.

Tests included:

  • Colour test – identifying traffic light colours

  • Peripheral vision test – press the button when you see the side light

  • Reaction brake test – press the brake when the red light appears

  • Depth perception test – align the two sticks

After passing the tests I went back down to the 2nd floor for the photo and payment.

Fee for the 5-year car licence: 505 baht.
Last time I renewed it was 605 baht, so it looks like the extra 100 baht card fee has been abolished.

Nice bonus: my birthday was last week so the new licence now expires on 6 March 2032, meaning it’s valid for almost 6 years.

Also worth noting: no restrictions on the licence, same as previously, using the pink foreigner ID card as identification.

I walked out at 1:50pm – less than 40 minutes total, even though my appointment was for 2pm.

One of the quickest and easiest visits I’ve had there.

Edit: I forgot to add this earlier — the DLT Training QR code is needed.

The training can be done at home at your own time, and it’s valid for six months.

You can just show it to them on the phone as a screenshot.

Visit the Website: Go to www.dlt-elearning.com for the steps to Complete DLT Training (e-Learning).

So if you renew just after your birthday you can get 6 years and not 5 years.

Anyone know how long after the expiry they will still let you apply to renew and not have to redo your driving licence (I.e. do the actual driving part of the test).

According to published information, you can renew an expired license without taking a driving test if the license has been expired for less than 1 year.

But it is not really wise to drive with an expired license. If you have an accident, your insurance company may deny a claim on the grounds of breach of contract (no valid license).

Because licenses are issued until your birthday, renewing on or shortly after your birthday ensures the 5-year validity period covers the maximum time, essentially adding up to 6 months extra.

One year maximum after expiry.

Hope this helps 😎
