Iran’s ‘mosaic defence’ defies US-Israeli air war

Nearly three weeks into a relentless US-Israeli air campaign, Iran’s regime remains battered but operational. Thousands of airstrikes have flattened command centres and security bases across the country, yet Tehran’s military response continues.

The reason lies in a doctrine decades in the making: Iran planned for this war long before the first bombs fell.

A Regime Built to Survive Losing Its Head

Israel’s strategy aimed at decapitating the Islamic Republic’s leadership. Supreme leader Ali Khamenei and senior security figures, including Ali Larijani, were reportedly killed in early strikes targeting the core of Iran’s ruling system.

But the collapse many in Washington and Jerusalem expected never came. Iran had already built a system designed to function even if its leadership was wiped out.

Inside Tehran’s ‘Mosaic Defence’ Doctrine

The answer is “mosaic defence” — a decentralised command structure modelled on resistance movements and insurgent networks. Authority is dispersed across autonomous cells able to operate independently when central command is destroyed.

Local commanders are granted standing orders and operational freedom. If one link in the chain is cut, another immediately takes over. In some units, succession runs four layers deep.

Air Power Meets a System Designed to Absorb It

More than 4,000 airstrikes have hit Iranian military infrastructure, including bases linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Many facilities above ground have been obliterated.

Yet drone attacks on US bases across the Gulf continue. Shipping lanes remain threatened, and Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz — a critical artery for global energy supplies — has not loosened.

Lessons Learned from America’s Own Wars

Iran’s planners drew heavily on conflicts where US military power struggled to impose lasting control. The Revolutionary Guards studied insurgent campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and refined tactics alongside allied militias.

Hezbollah bomb makers trained Shia fighters to deploy shaped-charge roadside bombs capable of piercing US armour — weapons later hidden in fake rocks along Iraqi roads.

A War Israel and America May Not Control

Israel and the US are betting that sustained pressure will trigger an uprising inside Iran. So far, there are no signs of revolt.

Instead, Tehran’s foreign minister has openly framed the strategy: decentralised command means the regime decides when — and how — the war ends.

The Pressure Now Shifts to Washington

President Donald Trump insists the campaign has already crippled Iran’s military capacity. But continued attacks across the Gulf suggest otherwise.

If Iran’s planners succeed, their victory will not be battlefield domination. It will be something far simpler — a war Washington cannot decisively finish.

Unlike Trump, Iran’s regime has been plotting this war for decades

US will have to destroy all their oil and gas installations to cut off their income supply ,and leave them too poor to rebuild anything, back to the Stone Age !

The Germans thought they were smarter than the Russians in WWII.

The British thought the sun would never set on their empire.

The Russians thought they were smarter than the Ukrainians.

So many lessons, so few leaders absorb them.

IMO that is known as " cutting off your nose to spite your face".

Cut off their income and the place will crash into the dust
