Child labor cases dropped markedly from 828,000 in 2022 to 509,000 in 2024, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). This decrease of 38.5% is attributed to rigorous government efforts and a comprehensive “whole-of-society” strategy aimed at tackling child labor. Despite the progress, the DOLE highlights that poverty continues to drive the issue, stressing ongoing efforts are crucial.

The decline was achieved through coordinated interventions involving both government and partner organizations, which successfully withdrew 319,000 children from labor over the last three years. The government has supported this initiative by providing livelihood assistance to affected families. Over 47,000 parents and guardians have received starter kits via the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program to alleviate financial burdens that lead to child labor.

Despite the positive trend, the DOLE underscores the necessity of sustained effort, stating collaboration among all stakeholders is vital to continue the reduction. Assistant Secretary Amuerfina Reyes emphasized that addressing child labor requires "steadfast collective action" rather than isolated efforts. Initiatives such as Project Angel Tree have played a role by providing essentials and educational materials to over 59,000 children since 2022.

For future progress, the DOLE encourages public involvement in reporting child labor cases via the Makabata Helpline 1383. This initiative aims to ensure children stay in school and are shielded from exploitation. The department plans further collaborative efforts to sustain and build on the success achieved so far, reported Philstar.
