Great now we will get to sit and wait as cheapo falangs try and argue with drivers that they should only pay 15 never 20. I would be perfectly fine with 20 baht for falangs and 10 baht for thais...of

I'm struggling to see how this is a similar situation. You think people will be searching out 10bt busses "elsewhere"?

Its mostly the Indians who hold up the baht buses by trying to haggle with the driver for a group discount...While everyone else on the baht bus sits there and waits..

Give them 15 and wait for the angry face, or not

Finally the 18lt water bottle I have full to the brim of 50 satang coins has a use.

The sangthaews are subject to peak periods when they are packed too. It's like that with any transit system. There won't be any reduction in ridership over the longterm. And if people can't afford 5 baht for a truck ride, they certainly cannot afford to purchase and operate a motorbike.

I worked most of my life in public transit. There is some demand elasticity when prices rise, even in publicly funded systems. People with low paying jobs often seek employment closer to where they live. I agree that people who can't afford the increase won't be buying motorbikes, but the price difference between a songtaew and bolt motorbike might make the latter a more attractive option. Public transit is a pain in the ass unless you're traveling short distances in densely populated areas.

AFAIK the Baht Bus runs with diesel, which is made by crude oil. When some morons hinder the passage of tankers via the Strait of Hormuz the oil prices rise. As the Baht Busses are running on high priced diesel, the prices will rise... very obviously.

Not only in hell, even in heaven the cost of living will rise.

I sincerely hope my explanation is clear enough for you to comprehend (it really is not rocket science).

Fair enough, but I didn't see any mention of the nation who instigated the problem in the first place. You know, the one who is constantly attacking its neighbours and bombing civilian populations? I think their leader is wanted in most civilised nations and can't even land a plane there for fear of arrest.

"the one who is constantly attacking its neighbours"

That sure is a matter of opinion.

Today, except for a handful of chosen people, its common knowledge who is the mad man who has made the entire world suffer.

I would be perfectly fine with 20 baht for falangs and 10 baht for thais...of course that will send the dual pricing what a rip off brigade into hissy fits of how dare you require me to pay more than Thais many of whom make a fraction of what I spend on beer every day.

I remember when Baht bus fare went from B5 to B10, and yes endless arguments. Took several years before it calmed down. That was about 20 years ago. What else has stayed the same price for 20 years? I really can't think of anything.

Their fault they should have raised the fare over several years

Hardly cheap , that's a 50 cent AUD Australian price hike , can you imagine doing that in Australia, put the bus fare up 50 cents in a day ,

Majority of people in Aus that may be affected by a price hike would already have a concession card giving them free or heavily subsidised public transport.

What about non falang tourists, Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc? ANd what about those that do not drink beer? I suspect 15 baht for the Pattaya circle and 20 baht if you board in Jomtien and disembark in Pattaya and the other way around. Would I get the cheaper fare if I did not get a seat and had to hang off the back like a monkey?

I see. So what is the 600 baht/month payment to low income families for? Are you aware of the tax measures that apply such as the tax free allowance for children? Are you oblivious to the fact that the government increased seniors allowances and pensions? The increase was intended to address these types of cost adjustments.

I don't know why you expect the sangthaew operators to operate at a financial loss. If they can't cover their costs, they won't provide the service.

I am perfectly aware of child tax allowance and pension payments as have and are in receipt of both which has nothing to do with this subject. So a baht bus operator has to pay 200 extra a day in fuel but transports 200 customers...nice profit for them 👍

The cost of repairs , fuel , labour and of vehicles has increased over the past 10+ years. The operators deserve a cost of living increase too.

Baht bus should have been 15 before the fuel increases. Thailand should slowly increase prices rather than big jumps. I wonder if bolt fairs are going up, some people may switch

The Thai baht bus drivers are doing it better than the jeepeny drivers in the Philipines. The fares are set by the Government and they won't raise them so the poor drivers are now working day and night for nothing with the high cost of diesel.

In the Provinces in the Philipines the school kids ride on the roof of the Jeepenies for free. Why dont you try that with the baht buses ???

In Queensland Australia ,for the last couple of years ALL public transport is 50 cents. wherever you go exept for the airport train in Brisbane which is owned by a private company.

How much fuel do they use a day ?

You won't get that in the State of NSW ( Sydney)

Pensioners / unemployed with a concession card still pay $2.50 about 50 baht a day, unlimited, for all public transport buses ,trains ,ferries ,but why isn't it free ?

What would the goons who administer the beatings to fare evaders do if there were no fares to pay?

The money has to come from somewhere. Sorry to copy/paste AI but it gives a succinct explanation and accounting.

The previous Labour Government brought that in as an election sweetener but they got voted out on their ar@e and the incoming Gov. continued it on. It's a big hit now with the high fuel prices due to the IRAQI Despots..

The story doesn't say what the price moved from, and it's been a while since I was in Pattaya,

where I paid 10 baht. So a 50% - 100% increase seems a bit excessive.

Who...........?

In London for the over 60s like me all public transport is free thank Boris who I hate he spaffed this up the wall when he was mayor. Safe and clean as well. But seriously they should have gone to 20 baht flat fare and be done.

Don't suggest that to the Indians

Give exactly 15 baht and walk a way

I agree 15 baht is a pain and not worth the hassle. Just make it a flat 20 I can't remember the last time it went up but I really hate digging for change or waiting while 5 guys get off and have to have change made

Not sure yet how this 15 - 20 thingie is gonna work out but I can predict one likely common scenario in the many cases when there might be uncertainty about whether 15 or 20.

Give exact change -- likely to usually be accepted

Give 20 -- no 5 baht change offered and most people will just wisely let it go

Neither the drivers nor the riders will want to be making a scene over every fare.
