Great now we will get to sit and wait as cheapo falangs try and argue with drivers that they should only pay 15 never 20. I would be perfectly fine with 20 baht for falangs and 10 baht for thais...of

I'm struggling to see how this is a similar situation. You think people will be searching out 10bt busses "elsewhere"?

Its mostly the Indians who hold up the baht buses by trying to haggle with the driver for a group discount...While everyone else on the baht bus sits there and waits..

I would be perfectly fine with 20 baht for falangs and 10 baht for thais...of course that will send the dual pricing what a rip off brigade into hissy fits of how dare you require me to pay more than Thais many of whom make a fraction of what I spend on beer every day.

I think 15 baht is still reasonable, the problem will be if you don't have the right money you won't get change from 20 and the arguments will start. It is effectively 20 baht by stealth.

Yep, they don't like giving small change which is why you need the correct amount, 15, with a 5 on standby

As I mentioned before, I suggest they sell rolls of tokens perhaps for locals at something like 13 baht a token, minimum sale 100 tokens. That would represent a discount for locals including many Thais and there would be no issues with change for that segment. The baht bus company could make money on time factor and unused tokens. Yes I mean good for 15 and 20 baht rides. Sure there might be a black market with Thais selling them for a small markup to tourists, but really, not a big deal.

For tourists who just want a souvenir they could sell a special edition one with fake gold plating for 100. Could even do special theme ones like for Songkran, bar girls, you name it.

Heck the drivers could even be the sales point for the souvenirs, a new income stream for them. It's a tourist city. MILK IT.

In the Provinces in the Philipines the school kids ride on the roof of the Jeepenies for free. Why dont you try that with the baht buses ???

I don't even consider the option of swinging on the back stand... since I heard of a Hong Kong guy falling and fatally injured himself.

I see the "Thais are all out to get you" brigade are out in full force.

Of course there will be some drivers who will try and keep the change. But if you stand there expectantly after giving your 20bt, I'm sure most drivers would give the correct change.

They always did when the fare was 10bt, so I really don't see why it would suddenly be different now.

A variable fare 15-20 is an entirely different situation than before.

I think you're wrong. They generally won't offer change from a 20 unless perhaps if they know you only took a very short ride.

What is 5 baht good for? Not much...

Loads of people won't want 5 baht change.

About time, and 20 baht isn't going to break the bank. Hell of a lot cheaper than owner a car. Even an inexpensive one, whether EV or ICEV. Especially if living in one of them '15 minute cities'.

Just sits in the carport, if having, costing money everyday whether driving or not.

People need to get some walking in everyday anyway. Less stressful than looking for a parking spot most times.

Still waiting for someone to post from an official source.

Why? Are you going to continue to pay 10 baht until you get your "official source"?

That's a fair point; a variable fare is a different situation and I hadn't taken that into account.

At the end of the day, for those who are worried about it, just pay with a 10 and a 5 and slowly walk away. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to correct you if you've given them too little.

The official source would be Chonburi land transport office and they've received the request (from the owners association) but not issued anything to say whether they're for or against it.

Go ahead and report drivers on 1584 if you think it's going to be beneficial.

Drivers have started holding up 15 baht signs as you pay, probably because of people like you still waiting for some alternate source

As Ive said my times in this forum, the worst places for Thais and expats to live are tourist areas. When I go to my house on the outskirts of Bangkok I can't believe the difference in the cost of shopping compared to Pattaya. Today I walked to my local market, I bought 2 large pineapples and a large bunch of bananas, throw in one serve of chicken and vegetable soup. The total cost was 135 baht. Even a small bar where the locals meet a large bottle of Thai beer is 60 baht, Even the osmosis drinking water is only 4 baht to fill a large container, Pattaya is 5 baht.

You never know how clean those fill-it-yourself water machines are....Hey I used them for years....But I am convinced the water from those machines is very low grade..

Personally I don't care about the 5 baht. But surely a lot of people will care if they feel they're being overcharged.

If I happen to have 15 baht change, I'll hand that over.

If not, I'll pay with a 20 baht note and not expect change.

Also for very long rides I think it's reasonable now to just pay the 20 regardless even though previously it was only supposed to be 10 which was of course a bargain.

No, it would be the Banglamung Baht Bus Cooperative, who I remember being very vocal, when the likes of Bolt & Grab Taxis appeared. This fare rise, nothing.

Yesterday there was a sign displayed in the bus that the fare had risen to 15 baht. I paid with a 20 baht note and received my change.
