The Israeli reservist shot 14-year-old Aws al-Naasan in the head just outside the western gate of the Mughayyir boys’ secondary school, where he was studying in ninth grade.

Aws collapsed instantly, bleeding heavily. More shots rang out as his friends ran to his side, picked up his now-limp body and rushed him out of the line of fire, their path along the school wall marked by a trail of their classmate’s blood.

A video captured the shooter, a reservist in partial military uniform, taking aim at the school from the hillside above. A few minutes later the same man killed the younger brother of an English teacher Waheed Abu Naim, whose family live beside the school. Jihad Abu Naim was 36; his wife is heavily pregnant with the couple’s first child, a girl due this month.

Aws and Abu Naim were shot dead on 21 April amid a wave of settler violence in the occupied West Bank, much of which has targeted schools and students in the territory.

Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed at least 792 teachers and 18,639 students, according to the UN, and damaged or destroyed nine out of 10 school buildings.

But students and schools are also targets of spiralling Israeli violence in the occupied West Bank, where there is a climate of near total impunity for attacks on Palestinians.

A few hours after Aws was killed outside his school, settlers attacked and demolished a British- and European-funded school for Palestinian children in a village 25 miles to the north.

In Hammamat al-Maleh, in the northern Jordan valley, settlers used bulldozers to raze four classrooms, school toilets and the two playground areas into a heap of twisted metal and crumpled plastic, scattered with ruined books.

The French government, which contributed some of the funding to the school, has demanded compensation from the Israeli government for the destruction.

In the south Hebron Hills, on 13 April Israeli settlers put razor-wire across the road to the school attended by Palestinian children from Umm al-Khair village, blocking students from crossing since then.

“This path is not just a road, it is the lifeline that connects our children to their education and to a sense of normal life,” said one resident, Tariq Hathaleen. “The purpose is clear to us: to pressure our community to leave our land, to intimidate us through our children.”

You're absolutely right. The first years of Jewish (Zionist?) immigration to the Mandate were peaceful and neighbourly. No doubt the Arabs taught these first settlers how to live in such an inhospitable desert.

The original manifesto of the Zionist movement, the Basel Program, was unanimously adopted at the First Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland, on 30 August 1897. It made no mention of displacing Palestinians. You can read it here: https://azm.org/basel-program-1897/

After the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, the Basel Program was replaced in 1951 by the expanded Jerusalem Program as the ideological basis of political Zionism. It didn't mention displacing Arabs.

Theodor Herzl is credited as the father of modern political Zionism and he did not advocate displacement of Arabs, much less their annihilation. "In Herzl’s vision, Arab landowners would willingly sell their land in order to invest in modern agriculture and industry. Israel has become an utterly brutal nation and they currently seem to be the leading terrorist. nation in the Middle East.

Why doesn't the US stand up to them many are wondering.

Israel must be very careful at this point as they are losing support around the world, by the day it's gotten to the point where there are very few nations who are still supportive of Israel, and the IDF. If the US withdrew it's support, it would put them in dire straits, and very isolated. And we might be looking at a failed state. They deserve that, in my opinion. I believe all the lessons of the Holocaust have been forgotten within the current very sad state of affairs in Israel.

Am I a Jew hater? Absolutely not, as I have many Jewish friends and family that I adore. Do I hate Israel? Certainly not the people, but I do hate the current Israeli government. Much as I hate the current American government, it doesn't make me an America hater, though the fake patriots on this forum would argue otherwise.

Yeah, since I became aware of this issue, you're right, I have become a hardline anti-Zionist and am even on the cusp of believing that Jews do not deserve a State of Israel.

Where were Palestinians in 1897? D'uh, living peacefully in Palestine, of course! Parts of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, even Egypt. There may have been a handful of Jews on the land but immigration didn't really pick up significantly until the 20s.

Your figures show a fivefold growth in the Palestinian population in Palestine. It is completely impossible to estimate the Jewish birthrate during that period because of massive immigration. However, ~8.7M babies were born in Israel 1948-2026.

To put things in a more realistic perspective, in 1948, there were 717,000 Jews in Israel and today, almost 8M. Not quite equal numbers but expelling the Palestinians to Somaliland would be a logistical fubar.

As for annihilation, Israelis keep trying, don't they.
