I am living on Koh Tao and was wondering what the best public hospitals are in Samui, Chumpon and Surrathani. Public, since I am on a budget.

The state run hostpital in Nathon is very good. Don't expect any frills though.

the one in nathons ok ,many of the doctors work in the private ones and do a morning or two in this hospital.be prepared for a wait as it gets very busy......

Skip over Koh Phangan's hospital --it is terrible. My father-in-law still gets coconuts down with the big stick (stubborn old man :o ) and was hit directly on the arm by a coconut fallling from a tree. He went to the govt hospital on the island only to be told that the X-ray tech was not available but the doctor felt his arm a bit and told him she thought it was ok.

A man of his generation, he believed the doctor and endured a week and a half of pain before going to Surat to have his arm xrayed. It was broken and had started to knit back together crooked. He had to have it rebroken and a pin inserted. Duh. A 70 year old man gets hit by a coconut in the arm and she guesses its not broken??

Anyway the Surat govt hospital is pretty good but extremely busy.

SBK, Do you happen to know the aprox. amount of deaths from coconut falling on heads?

Thought you might know, with your father-in-law and all!?

Almost none :o Its a myth. Talked with an old lady in town about that once, she is in her 80's and she can remember one person getting killed by a coconut when she was young.

Usually, these guys are pretty good (and fast), my father-in-law is just a bit old to be doing it is all, but can't tell him that!

Sorry, haven't heard anything about Chumphon, I imagine its a pretty small hospital tho. The main one would be in the Ampur Muang.
