A whole 8 seconds!

Just imagine, 7 transactions in a day and that's a whole minute of your day lost!

😀

I never scan unless there is no other way. Every company believes it has the best security but if the Federal Reserve can be hacked I am pretty sure the services here in Thailand can be.

You may think its safe and convenient I think it's the very slippery slope to a

dangerous digital dystopia.

In this terrifying digital dystopia of yours - where digital money is the root of all evil, every movement is tracked, all your information is stored forever, the Earth is flat, vaccines are a Big Pharma scam, and apparently we never even made it to the moon…

…I’m honestly surprised you use cash at all.

Isn’t that still giving “the man” too much control?

Surely true freedom means abandoning the oppressive modern system entirely. Forget money. Forget convenience. Forget basic functionality.

You should be out there bartering tins of tuna and AAA batteries for hand jobs and goat milk while hiding from 5G towers in a hand-built jungle bunker made of pallets and Facebook screenshots.

At least then the surveillance state will never discover your secret purchase history of breath mints, foot powder and industrial-strength haemorrhoid cream.

Valid point on the 'post QR Scan' PIN needing to be entered - thats why the 'tap and go' (used else where is so much more convenient).

What is the BKK Bang 'Widget' (iPhone) that we only need to press and scan ?? - seems very convenient (more so than the Kasikorn App).

When you long press the app, as explained by another member, to get the pop-up menu where you select scan, there is no fingerprint or pin required.
For the past few months I pay everywhere with QR code, as I got tired of pockets full of 1 baht coins change.

I'm sure it takes much longer than 8 seconds to get your money out of your pocket, hand it over to the cashier, then wait for your change.

Ohh and to get back on Topic, when you scan those QR codes you have no idea

where the payments actually go or if they link to malware etc.

The rise in app- and phone-based parking payment has opened a new frontier for fraudsters: quishing – so called because they are phishing attacks that start with a QR code

https://www.theguardian.com/money/2025/may/25/qr-code-scam-what-is-quishing-drivers-app-phone-parking-payment

That’s actually a very valid point - but it’s also typical of the kind of contrarian anti-authoritarian mindset that finds a thread of truth and then sprints off into full-blown paranoia with it.

“Quishing” scams are real, and anyone blindly scanning QR codes in public places should use a bit of common sense. Thats where there is some risk.

But there’s a huge difference between “there are fraud risks online” and “the digital dystopian surveillance regime is harvesting your soul through parking meters”.

Firstly, if you scan a malicious QR code directly through your camera app, the risk is obviously greater because you may be redirected to a fake site or prompted to install something dodgy - thats stupidity.

Secondly, modern banking apps and payment systems have fraud detection built into them. If a QR transaction detail is suspicious, unknown or doesn't match expected merchant patterns, banks frequently block or flag them.

And most importantly - you do actually know where the payment is going, because before you authorise anything the app or banking system literally shows you the merchant/payee details and asks you to confirm the payment.

I agree with your point regarding the rise of app-based parking etc has opened a new frontier for scammers. That part is true. But it’s also ridiculously easy to avoid the risk.

Simple solution: Don’t scan the QR code for the parking app at all.

Just go directly to the App Store or Google Play, find the official app yourself, install it properly, and then enter the location or car park details manually.

Recent example:

Parked at a UK train station - new parking provider and a train leaving in minutes.

Didn’t stand there scanning random QR stickers with my camera app.

Train tickets purchased (online app) as we arrived, tickets went straight to our phone wallets, we walked through the turnstiles and got on the train.

Once onboard, official parking app downloaded from App Store, entered the car reg, paid, and later extended the parking in seconds when plans changed.

No drama. Just basic common sense and efficiency - you'd have missed the train while worrying about about being traced.

If there is no further need to confirm the transaction with a Banking App PIN - then it is quick.

Just Lift the phone & FaceScan to open phone > Long Tap on App > Select [Scan] > Scan the QR > look at amount and press [OK] to confirm = Done.

Apple Pay is even easier - Double Tab the side button > face scan > touch phone to point of sale device = Done

Card is quicker - but its often slower to get the actual card out of wallet than a phone out of the pocket (hardly a big deal).

Basically - anyone concerned that a transaction is taking too long at this stage is looking too hard for the negatives - they're all way less than 10 seconds which is a hell of lot quicker than some boomer digging out the right change or having to wait for their change.

Thats the whole flaw in the 'anti-digical payment' arguments and debates on here where people say they are stuck behind people paying via phone - the reality is as you mention - Digital payments are much faster.

By this stage we usually start get the 'out of battery' or 'power cut' anecdotes.

I'm increasingly using it wherever it's possible. When in Thailand, I use it with my TrueMoney MasterCard, so 1 baht spent costs me exactly 1 baht, same as with any TrueMoney or PromptPay QR code payment. For the merchant it's probably a lot more expensive though.

The Mastercard isn't a credit card so shouldn't charge merchants too much, however my Clarity credit card probably does

That should be the case, and in many cases is true, but we've all been held up at the till by someone with payment issues and a disproportionally high number of times it's down to phone payers. I don't know the reasons for it but you seldom (not never) see it with cash payers.

Of course the anecdotes will come now regarding the purse at the bottom of the bag and counting out coppers and the cashier counting notes in the change five times over, but the fact remains most of the holdups I see are phone based.

Now if only contactless with a physical card was more widely available.

No it’s not - it’s ppl digging for the right change…. There predictable enough for you ?

Its actually just disorganised people on both sides of this fence who slow things down.

There's an anti-anecdote for everything ! The reality is the same type of person who is slow to digitally pay will be the same person who is slow to dig out their wallet & change etc

In aggregate digital payment is much much faster than paying with cash.

Agreed - or something as simple as ApplePay (googlepay) which I used in pretty most countries I visit.

Very few people dig for the right change. Most just hand over the notes and wait for the cashier to do her bit. Of course there are disorganised on both sides but there appears to be more phone ditherers than cash ones in proportion to the overall numbers of each.

The abnormally high number of disorganised phone payers makes for a slower overall experience for everyone, including the quick, organised tap and go-ers. Changing them back to cash won't make any difference as they'd be slow with that too so yes, in aggregate things have improved but there's a long way to go.

50/50 on that. It still requires an app and use of a phone so if you can't/won't open up a bank app and prepare it in advance of being presented a QR code or whatever, you'll be the same with Google Wallet.

Simiarily, someone who doesn't have notes in their hand when the total appears on the till won't have a bank card in their hand ready to tap either so almost back to square one.

You spend 5-10 minutes in a queue to pay and then when it’s your turn you’re worried about the 10 seconds it takes to complete a scan to pay?

From my perspective you are focusing on a minute detail that is lost among the endless queues of life.

But then, I’m retired and don’t consider my time so important that I have to rush to complete everything.

With my K-Bank App - When I 'long press' the App Icon (2 seconds) - it takes me straight to a menu (as you mentioned) - but I still have to scan, put in the amount (if not automated by the QR code) and still verify with a PIN.

So the only real difference is the way we 'get to the scan' part of the App.

It still only takes a couple of seconds - so its neither here nor there, but did get the impression (from you) there is no post transaction verification require (finger-print / scan required) - but I definitely have to put my Banking PIN in whichever way I open the App.

Here's what bothers me about people paying by QR code. They stand there as the cashier rings up their purchases and then only afterwards they start to dig around in their purse or pocket, finally pull out their phone, open the app, try to find the spot to click to scan the QR code, get to the payment screen, might have to put in the amount of the transfer, then click on that, then save the receipt. I could have paid twice in the time it's taken them. But I will say that things have gotten better as more and more people get used to using their banking apps.

Don't get me started on the people trying to use some points, a coupon, or the like on some vendor's app! 😆

Less than 10 seconds going to make you late for something? Heres a tip, open the app before payment is requested if you need to save that t8me!

That point has been done to death and the same person if paying by cash may well only start looking for their purse/wallet after everything has been rung through, dig through the contents of their handbag/manbag to find it's not there, find it in their pocket then painstakingly unfold the notes etc etc taking just as long if not longer.

The point made upthread though was there seems disproportionally more of the phone ditherers than the cash ones.

I think a couple of things come into play. More people are using phone apps, so it's more noticeable. There's a learning curve and some take the slow and cautious approach. Cash and credit card payments are old school with no learning curve. Card speed only becomes questionable when the terminal is slow or when someone's spent over their card limit. All are frustrating when you're next in line. Hah!

I always seem to get behind the person who forgot to get their fresh veggies weighed and priced!

Kasikorn Bank also has a Quick Pay limit that you can configure in the app. If your transaction value is below, you don't need to enter your PIN.
