That's simply wrong. I use my IPhone for contactless payments in Thailand all the time. Thousands of baht. I use Apple Pay on my phone. I could do the same thing with my Apple Watch if I needed to. I'm not sure what the most I've ever spent is. Maybe in the neighborhood of 7,000 baht at the grocery store? Something like that. I just remembered. I bought a TV at PowerBuy using contactless payments. I think that was around 40,000 baht. Anyway, if they take it, there's probably no limit, other than what you have available as credit or in your bank account.

The 'contactless' works great - Wife and I have it on our Thai Credit cards (and also on the bank cards) - but, Thai cards will not work with ApplePay - I'm not sure why as that would streamline a whole lot of payment systems.

Interesting. I don't have any Thai cards, so I wouldn't know that. I just have an Apple Card and a few US credit and debit cards. And they all seem to work in Thailand using Apple Pay.

One thing I have run across, though, is that some merchants won't take Apple Pay payments at all, but they will take the underlying credit card if you have that handy. That doesn't make much sense to me, but whatever. It's not like I buy stuff from them on a daily basis.

Apple takes a 'small cut' - so there would be the credit card cut + the ApplePay cut - which is why some merchants reject ApplePay at point of sale - otherwise, as you highlighted for the most part ApplePay works wherever there is a 'contactless payment' but only with non-Thai cards.

... and the reason ApplePay has not been adopted in Thailand (with Thai cards) is not due to a technical limitation, rather, Thailand already has an almost universally adopted payment system in PromptPay, so ApplePay offers banks very little additional value while requiring them to pay Apple a fee on every eligible transaction.

From the banks' perspective, they're being asked to pay for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist (as they already have PromptPay).

I wonder how many sales they lose as a result of not accepting Apple Pay?

It would have been an impulse buy for me, but one weekend I was in Central Festival and decided I wanted a new IPhone. I had my phone with me, but no actual credit cars. I never carry those around. Anyway, the store wouldn't take Apple Pay. And so I bought nothing. When I got home, I ordered the phone online, from the apple Store in Thailand.
