Moto Gp Heroes

After 33 years, It looks like Casey Stoner {Aus} and Ducati will bring the manufactures title back to Europe, the last time was with Phil Read on the MV Augusta in 1974, {still the greatest sounding bike ever!!!! }

Long gone are the days when GP riders would compete in 3 classes at 1 meeting, and think nothing of it, for me these men were the real heroes of motorbike racing and perform at national meetings plus the TT races.

My top list would be, Giacomo Agostini

Mike Hailwood

Phil Read

Kork Ballington,

All multi-class winners in the same year, and Barry Sheene, for being the personality he was,

What would your list be??

Cheers, Lickey..

Stoner has done a great job this year, shame him and Rossi did'nt get to battle it out toe to toe.

Still well done to him, he's took advantage of a great package and has'nt put a foot wrong all season.

Ops sorry Mark 100, Surtees should have been on my list too, for winning the 500cc World Championship and the Formula 1 WC, still the only man to have ever done this, Makes me wonder what would have happened if Rossi did move to Ferrari, he hasnt lost that chance yet!!

Found this great website, has all the noises of the multi-cylinder and twins and singles with famous "black Leather" racers aboard, mostly in the 60s, the links off this site are very goo too,

Enjoy this, I listened to them all, brought back special memories, Cheers, Lickey..

My hometown boy from Houston (Spring Branch, where the family had a Yamaha dealership), Kevin Schwantz, was rated in a major British magazine. "The October 2004 TWO magazine said on page 106, '…outrageously talented riders like the heroic Kevin Schwantz, who is rightly regarded as one of the best in history.' "

l think Rossi may still make the move in 2009.

lf you like your classic bikes you should try and get to the goodwood festevial of speed held annually in the UK, they have everything on 2 and 4 wheels from the last 40 years its a fantastic couple of days.

Would totally agree the only reason l did'nt have him on my list was, l was struggling to spell his name!!

Schwantz is hard to spell. Kenny Roberts might belong in the top ten, as well.

Roberts for sure what about Lawson and Gardner ??

What about Max Biaggi, Alex Criville, Loris Capirossi, Luca Cadalora and Daryl Beattie in fact anyone who rode a 2 stroke 500 and won on it should be on a list.

GREAT site. Thanks....

1. Rossi

2. Hailwood

3. Schwantz

4,5,..... All the rest of the guys from the 500cc era

And even though I didnt like him, Biaggi for providing the scraps with Rossi 2001-2005. Those battles were fun to watch. Can't forget "the finger".....

rossi finger

And anyone who hasnt seen the movie "Faster"- its a must see- you can download it from a number of sites

"Revin Kevin" Schwantz, yes, an interesting rider by all means, saw him a few times in the Transatlantic Match Races in the UK, I think the yanks won a coulpe of times with him in their team, also at Donnington Park, he was exiting the hairpin with the back wheel spinning and the front wheel in the air, all out of line as well, a great rider in his day, but im sorry folks, his 1 world Championship was gifted to him by Wayne Rainey crashing at Misano in 1993, Rainey was leading the points easily.

Some great Aussie riders too, Gardner, Doohan,Corser,Bayliss, not forgetting Aron Slight [NZ] always the bridesmaid!!.

Now, there is somebody who has done the lot and its Yer Maun, Joey Dunlop, 26 times TT winner in all classes, OBE and MBE to his credit, have a look at his website,

Thanks, Lickey.

Talking about major wheelies, take a look at this. The bike is a Suzuki Hyabusa with a turbo, the bike and the rider is known as "Ghost-Rider" They have made some awsome videos.

Regards

lf that is a mph speedo then that is a very fast wheelie!!

It is, the front wheel comes down at 200kph and he top out at 352kph, so pretty fast. Got some videos they made, out run the cops and other crazy stuff.

This one is the most amazing safe I have ever seen.

Thanks for the input so far people, dont mean to "off track" here, but i was asking about riders who competed in more than one GP at one meeting, Rossi is my present hero for his abbilty to get to the front, but would this shine through at 2/3 GPs on the same day??

Thanks, Lickey.

I guess that now, there are many safety issues, that wasent pressent in the past, rules have change and the sport is more about money and PR, than the actual preformance, in the past it was different. This has happend to most sports, and it is indeed sad.

My favorit race is Ilse of Man, that still have some of the old spirit.

Hi Lickey

I was first born in the mid 60s so I'm not to much help there, when I started to follow the GP, those days were long gone. Recent time there have been so many, and they are all very skilled riders, what bike they get to ride seems to predict the outcome.

I will never forget when Randy Mamola stopped the bike, to take a piss, that was funny, I admired Joey Dunlop for his heart, he was a true hero.

Tilipia, i see on another post that you are danish, I first went there to visit some friends id met the previous year,1976, mine was the first jap bike [cx500] allowed in there garage, amongst 1 Nimbus, 2 norton comandoes, 650 triumph, 500 triumph, 850 & 750 guzzis, My friends live on the coast near Fakse, they introduced me to the Brothers Kuhn, Norton/Triumph shop and racers from Copenhagen, I think at that time there was only 1 race a year in Danmark,so they would come to england a lot, take 2 bikes and rebuild them so avoiding high import tax on spares!!

Cheers, Lickey.

Hi Lickey

There isent really any great racing tracks in Denmark, most of the races is done in Sweden and Germany, there are some races in DK I'm not sure how many, I left there 19 years ago and havent really followed what's going on there. But I do know that taxes and dead expencive 180% in import tax and then another 25% on top of that in VAT....nice place....NOT

Stoner clinches first world title

_44132814_stoner203.jpg

Stoner started the race in ninth place after qualifying

Casey Stoner secured his first MotoGP world title at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday.

Ducati rider Stoner only needed to finish ahead of Yamaha's Valentino Rossi to claim the championship with three races remaining.

And with Rossi struggling back in 13th, sixth place was enough for 21-year-old Stoner to bag the points he needed.

Italian Loris Capirossi won the race on a Ducati ahead of Frenchman Randy De Puniet in second place.

Yes Mid, have to agree with you, 2nd full season in the premier class and Casey Stoned [well, tonight anyway] done it, I really thought he was holding off till Philip Island to do it, I really think Rossi should have stayed out there with the wet tyres, and perhaps come home in front of Stoner, Who knows?? Its been a very interesting year, and Rossi has been the the only real contender to Stoner, even though rossi had tyre and engine problems,

What i like about Rossi is he never gives up, im sure he knew the title was out of his hands, but he keeps trying, cant wait for Philip Island!!!!

Cheers, Lickey.
