I can't eat junk food anymore. Everytime I go for an AW or BK hamburger, I get sick after. (Blaster, we have a burger recipe thread in the western food forum). I also cannot eat processed or tinned foods anymore -- there is so much salt, MSG and phoney tastes in them. Even Campbell's soup. Sigh. Ya, I would say junk food aka fast food is full of trans fats, bleached of many nutrients and just generated to be made, served and fill up the gut fast. At home burgers, just try to use lean cuts or drain off the fat. BBQ is best, I heard, so the fat runs off.

miggy migs..do you like chilli chocolate? Had some once..good quality dark chocolate with a chilli kick. Although probably not prik pet enough for you? Thai people seem to be immune to chilli!! I had some SomTam yesterday and forgot to mention that i dont like too spicy..YOWZ! I couldnt finish it :o

soundman..pizza is so easy to make healthy. Try even making the bases yourself..so simple and fast. In fact making your own pasta is fast too. Ravioli is easier than you think also. Plus can fill with whatever filling you want. Yummmm all this food talk is making me hungry!

I made some chilli chocolate ice cream - it was awesome! Good quality choc, 70% cocoa, chocolate taste with a chilli aftertaste! Yummy!

I know what you mean Jettie, if you re-train your tastebuds ya' just can't take unhealthy food! There are so many things I can no longer eat and drink - or if I do, I feel sick!

I have a packet of swiss Lindt Chilli chocolate in my fridge!!! It's good, sweet with that chili kick...

Also re- junk food I do enjoy a BK occasionally especially as the place is just around the corner from my local pub so is a good sponge food.

I think that it is all in your mind and actually, BBQing the meat supposedly causes cancer.

I have been a vegetarian, a no eggs or dairy vegetarian, and a raw food vegetarian for long periods of time and junk food always tastes GREAT to me. Actually, a lot of organic food is almost tasteless.

No matter what anyone tells you, a Hershey's candy bar always tastes better than a carrot!

Isn't good taste an indication from our bodies that the food is good for us?

Oh great! Bbq now causes cancer :o Then again, im not sure what does'nt cause cancer.

My dog died of cancer. Maybe it was from the barbeque meat, or the pack a day he smoked.

Speaking of getting sick after eatting junk/fast food. Have you ever had a " White Castle" hamburger?

Isn't good taste an indication from our bodies that the food is good for us?

Unfortunatley not! Food loaded with salts, fats and sugers taste good. All, in excess, are bad! Also we train our pallete (sp?), we can train ourselves to like things that are bad or good for us.

If you are an excessive salt user and you cut down or even cut out salt, eventually you don't know how you ever used salt at all. I don't add salt to anything, yet many things taste salty to my now trained pallete.

Nice try SM. You were going to post next how that beer and Kebab have to be good for you... :o

Generally strong foods (esp salty ) will dull your taste buds. If you use a lot of ketchup etc..your palette will not be as attuned as someone who eats less processed salty foods. Also people who complain that simple fresh foods have no flavour are generally people who eat strong flavoured foods which have dulled their taste buds. Thus, they are unable to appreciate the delicate flavours.

If you cut out strong over processed foods you will eventually be able to savour delicate flavours once again as your taste buds will adapt.

Very true eek! So many people say some things are tasteless which I find very tasty. It's often because they have ruined their taste buds through years of abuse.

My father was told to give up salt which he used tons of, he had high blood pressure so it was essential (he had to cut out other things as well). However, as I was living at home I volunteered to give up salt also, to give him some support. Within a week or two both of us were enjoying our food more, saying how many things had become 'more' tasty! To my surprise many veggies that I considered to be quite tasteless became taste sensations. Brocolli and cauliflour are two in particular, I became a veggie lover and although I still eat meat, I eat far less than I used to, I just don't feel the need.

Speaking of getting sick after eatting junk/fast food. Have you ever had a " White Castle" hamburger?

No, but I have heard about them ever since I became an young adult and I want to make the pilgrimage to New York to taste one.

Eating at White Castle and In and Out Burger for a junk-food-junky are like seeing the Mona Lisa in person would be for an art critic! :o

me too me too hehe :D

I ate so much junk years ago..even as a veggie. Chips smoothered in ketchup or mayo/salad cream, pizza, veggie burgers, super strong curries etc. Lots of vegetables seemed pretty tasteless to me also back then. But I realised the hard way that if people ask how i can possibly enjoy 'tasteless' food ...there isnt much point in trying to explain. Blank stares and thoughts of "nutter" generally seems to be what springs to their mind. :o nvm eh. ^^

They are the worse things in the world for you and give you the " trot's" everytime you eat them but their great! :D

Actually, I LOVE a lot of vegetarian food.

I would eat it most of the time if it was convienient and well cooked, but good stuff that is something other than Thai is hard to find around here. "Greens" in San Francisco has good, healthy, tasty food with no meat and I could eat there 5 days a weak if I was really rich! :o

Im a lazy chef but i like good healthy food.

As i live on my own, I generally by a ton of fresh veg and pulses and dif textured tofu then cook up a storm (well as much as i can in my tiny apartment here). I part cook the tofu in a couple of different ways with different seasoning. I do the same with the veggies. All part cooked (or more just short of fully cooked). Then i use party plastic cups and separate the food into portions and stick them in the freezer. Then..when im hungry (I dont eat out that much..although sometimes buy veggie thai food. Even that can have a lot of oil and msg though so prefer more 'pure' food) i decide whether i want to make a soup or rice or salad or w/e and take out whatever 'cups' would go best with my meal and voila..fast food..sorta..cuz only take a short time to cook. NO mess, no fuss.

My gran taught me that trick years ago when she would make very concentrated vegetable soup and boil it down to veg + strong stock. Then would just take out and boil with added water.

Used to do the same with other foods too..when i had a proper kitchen. Pre-cook different dishes on a Sunday and the rest of the week would be easy and healthy..or at least healthy-ish. Quiche and Lasagna and curries etc, all made from scratch.

Apart from that i just buy fresh fruit from the vendors here and drink those fantastic fresh fruit drinks from Tops.

At least its a sorta healthy fast food idea. Works for me anyway.

Have you ever had a " White Castle" hamburger?

I think I saw that movie? 2 guys trying to get to the White Castle for a late night burger? ive never tried it, but according to these 2 guys...they absolutely rave about it, and considering what they went through that night to get one of these burgers, they must be really really good :o

Edit, I just remembered their slogan " White castle, what you crave"

I saw that movie too. Had a few laughs :D

Oh, they ARE good. They have saved my life many a time after a night baseball game and a few bars afterward. I think they put something in there that is addicting. :o

Speaking of deadening the taste buds - wonder if chillies do that.

I am addicted to very spicy & peppery foods (not mauch salt though - only on tastless meats).

Haven't noticed any "dulling" of the taste sensations - a burger from maccas still tastes the same as it did twenty years ago - I just have an urge to add chilli sauce or jalapeno's to it.

Be careful there pal

True story.

Lad i used to work with brought up on the indo/Pak border.

Hot, and I mean hot food every day, every meal. Became so obsessed, the level of chili got so high, nobody capable of eating with him.

One day felt a tad unwell. Next week given the last rights as his bowels began to disintegrate, rotten from the inside out.

Not a pretty sight ( smell ) when saying goodbye in the old hospice.

No urban myth.

Chilli or curry or combination?

Would this make chilli a "junk" food or a moderate poison?

Curry, Chili, you name it he swallowed it.....it killed him.

When you hear stuff like that it certainly makes you think twice about what you consume does to your body.

Im always cautious about drinking sugary drinks, especially cola, after reading that if you leave a tooth in some cola overnight..it makes the tooth soft. Eventually will dissolve it completely. Ok, granted, we swallow coke thus stomach acids deal with it, and with saliva there is little chance of coke doing such dramatic damage to the teeth in our mouths, but the mental image is one i find difficult to get past when i see regular full sugar coke. If i drink cola, ill have sugar-free!

Also I once saw images of prolapsed rectum, of course which horrified me. I realise its probably very rare to have happen but still its enough to make me aware that what food i eat has a chain of action to follow and i dont wish for any 'difficulty'..if you get me :o
