Note that there is no real point or moral to this story other than it being an interesting story.

It is a commonly accepted fact at our condo building that the overnight security guards get wasted while on the job. The security company has been changed numerous times but this seems to be a continuing motif.

Well last night was much the same as any other night. It was 4am and the security guard was downstairs drinking beer with some men who live in the building. The other men asked the security guard to go into the mini mart (located downstairs in the building) to get 4 more beers. Security guards goes in and says the "The guys outside want 5 more beers, they will pay you later". Security guard walks out with 5 beers and continues drinking.

The time came to pay the bill for these remaining beers and the women who owns the mini mart requested payment for 5 beers. The guys said they had only asked for 4, and would only pay for 4. At which point a "discussion" ensued as to who was to pay for the final beer.

The women in the store apparently wasn't happy with the outcome for this "discussion" and threatened to report the security guard. The security then decided that instead of paying for his beer he would try to punch the woman out, but in his drunken stupor missed and she ran into the building and got away.

The security guard then turned his attention to the mini mart, which was locked, and started smashing all the plate glass doors/windows in. This took him awhile as he wasn't able to find a satisfactory tool for the job; finally he found a big metal chair and put it through the door.

The whole thing was caught on video cameras that we have downstairs, and apparently the police he still looking for the security guard. The security company has offer to come up with the kingly sum of 3,000 baht to pay for damagers :o

It is an interested situation when the people 'Protecting' you are more dangerous than the criminal.

Anyways; comments or similar stories welcome.

What do you expect if the job carries no requirement at all besides being able to dress yourself?

And besides...how many people would volontary pay the higher fee to a security firm it would entail to have properly educated and trained security guards of high standard?

The old saying 'you get what you pay for' is true for both security guards and chinese toys.

Exactly but i think this goes beyond "you get what you pay for".

I would expect the guy to:

- Do nothing

- Show up late

- Get Drunk

- Not show up at all

- Allow the building to be burglarized

Vandalizing the property he is being paid to project didn't make my expected list of bad outcomes :o

We should not criticise and judge based on our "alien" values. Just because we do not understand doesn't make it wrong. This is their country and we have no right to second guess their actions. Remember we are just visitors here.

Oh just curious, how many pounds does a security guard earn in the UK? What qualifications do they need?

I was a security guard about 15 years ago after leaving the military. All the guys i was working with were retired ex army. We worked an 84 hour week for 2.50 per hour. Thankfully i found something better after a very short time but others struggled on this wage for a long time.

One would also expect the richest man in Thailand who made it to up to PM, to be able to control his urge to dip his fingers in the till, generally trash the place with his cronies and avoid killing over 2,500 of his fellow citizens in the process; but no, irresponsibility knows no boundaries it seems. :D

A thought just occured to me that maybe the traffic cop who had a bad day at work and turned all the lights to green and then danced in the middle of the ensuing pile up, got redeployed as Dave's security guard? :o

I am sure doctors and engineers in Myanmar or North Korea would be queuing for these high paid jobs in Thailand.

How much does a Dr get in Burma?

Now you have me interested so will ask my pal over lunch today who is a Dr from Burma but works in Singapore. He will gt a lot more now of course :o

if this incident happened in the Philippines many people will die and get injured, security guards there are loaded with guns and shotguns...

but then again, they are trained and will never do such a thing.

Well, I understand that Blackwater Security in Iraq has had to fire quite a number of their guards, perhaps you'd like one of these rabid creatures from the shallow end of the gene pool guarding your condo!!

That said, security guards here are a less than efficient lot. I've known people who have worked for security companies and they do have their hands full. The best one I heard of was a guard who was watching a Mercedes dealership. He was alone--or pretty much alone--got quite drunk, stole a brand new Mercedes from the shop, drove it through the dealership window and proceed to go for a ride hitting multiple vehicles in the process!

Wouldn't you hate to be his supervisor!

Yes he should have given her a good kicking too. Quite rightly women are second class citizens in Thailand as well as many other countries. (sarcasm)

Part of the point is that it's probably not a good idea to argue with drunks, although I must say, most drunks I know pay for their alcohol--otherwise, they won't get to get drunk there again!!

In this case the security guard (and his friends) are both not very good drunks and not very smart ones either. Apparently this is a dangerous combination.

"Thai Security" seems to be rather an oxymoron in quite a few cases. They are usually the facilitators of most organized moo baan burglaries, and certainly the people the cops round up first...

As i see it the security buisiness in LOS is just a way of taking money from residents in return for an otherewise unemployable thia in a uniform. If anything happens on my estate/village you can bet for sure it would be something to do with the security gaurd.

I couldnt guess wht mr mavis is on

When I was younger and living in Los Angeles, I worked as a security guard at the Packard Bell plant in Chatsworth for $5.50 an hour. Not really a living wage, and most of my fellow rent a cops were retired people who mostly slept on the job (graveyard shift 12 am-8 am). No one there could care less if someone made off with the factory and everything within. It is true that "you get what you pay for".

Not knowing Mavis, apart from noticing some of his posts since he seems to share a similar fitness interest

to mine, I think it would be a pretty safe bet, for those who need it spelled out, that it was a

rather amusing paragraph of sarcasm.

To understand that one also has to notice the brigade here that, all to frequently, eagerly speak up about how

"if you don't like it here, go home!", in response to whatever well deserving or non-deserving complaint a poster would

venture to put forward regarding <something> thai.

A thai killed your hamster? Thai bank stole your money? Well, you don't like that, you go home!

The guards in my current apartment building don't drink. They're all older guys, and I've only seen any of them drink on New Years.

Old apartment block though, the guards were drinking almost every night. They were quite friendly and sometimes I'd have a whiskey or a beer with them. However, often I'd come back around 3 or 4 am, and the guard would be totally passed out.
