Just rolled into town two days ago.

Not a bad little city, people are a bit aloof but decent enough.

However the bar scene is really massive in quantity (on the outskirts SE side), but hardly anyone seems to go to them! It's like, all the bars, but no people!

Where are you lot hiding :o? Cooped up in the little villages perhaps!

See you around dudes.

We are around Jim but maybe we take a little more spotting :o

Not sure where you have been looking but try the Soi that runs parrallel with the main shopping street, you will find the Irish Clock etc etc.

Check out www.udonmap.com. for some good info.

Maybe see you around.

I am never in Udon in the evening, as my wife now insists that we get home and off the highway before dark.

But I am glad to hear that the huge proliferation of farang bars, that I see has occurred, hasn't made for a raucous night scene.

Thais are very polite and unconfrontational, so it isn't apparent that there is some unease occurring in Udon and Khon Kaen due to so many more farang bars appearing in those cities.

If they spoke out, a lot of 'middle-occupation' Thais would say: "Parts of Bangkok (starting with GI R&R), then Pattaya, Phuket, and Koh Samui were ceded to those Thais who want to make money out of providing bars etc. to farang men who want bars. We don't want them here."

However, if it doesn't get out of hand, it will be lived with. We who are 'cooped up' in our little villages can but hope for the best.

True, friends and myself are wondering what's happening in Soi Farang and around:lot of newly opened places with no customers.Methinks the standard of most places is soo low that chases the punters away!

I wondered just where the Opening Poster had been. His question doesn't seem to refer to Soi Farang or the central area. 'Outskirts SE side' sounds like the area around the High-tech Plaza, which in my limited experience indeed has lots of Thai-style bars but is dead except for late at weekends. Probably the most interesting bar further out on Phosi Road (?)- and walkable from the Plaza - is the Full Moon Pub. During my visits to Udon that has been rather quiet early on but warms up later.

Hmm - when I left the UK last year I gave clothes away to the local charity shop - this included a bright yellow Mr Tong's t-shirt.

It was last seen on some old age pensioner down Margate sea front apparently!

Could try the Chareon Hotel, near the bus station and staggering distance from Farang Alley, 900 Baht a night and quite nice also has a pool. Yellow bird disco is next door.

Harry takes a short vacation this time of year.

There are things to do in Udon, but you really have to know your way around. Nothing is in your face like Pattaya.

If all else fails grab a tuk tuk for the evening and and they should find just about anything you want.

Speaking Thai helps a lot, remember not Pattaya.

Hopefully it never will be.
