Samui rich man shot dead in coffee shop

By CHATSURIYA ANUPAN

ONE of the local rich residents of Koh Samui was shot to death while taking his early-morning coffee at a shop early this month.

Meed Thongmak, 80, of 35/2 Moo 4, Bophut subdistrict, was shot four times with a .11-mm automatic gun in different parts of his body. A kind neighbor took him to a hospital in Chaweng where he was pronounced dead.

Theerayuth Nuthong, 29, a food-stall and coffee-shop owner, who took the victim to the hospital, said that at around 5:30 a.m., he heard the sound of a gunshot four times while inside his house. Soon after, he added, he heard the roar of a motorbike, apparently of the suspects, who escaped toward the Choengmon intersection. He went out with a relative to check what happened. He said he was shocked to find the bloodied victim.

Case investigator Lt. Col. Boonma Kaewlaoet said Mr. Meed was one of the rich residents of Samui who had previously lived at a house near the Bangrak temple. Later he built a new house at the back of the Samui airport to be near his daughter. It was disclosed that he owned a 20-rai (3.2-hectare) piece of land that could fetch up to Bt100 million in the market. He also rented out houses and rooms in Bophut, fetching him an income of P100,000 monthly.

He usually woke up at 5 every morning and on the day he was killed, he went to take coffee in a nearby shop. While taking coffee, two men riding in a motorbike stopped near his house. The man behind the driver got off and went straight to the victim, shooting him in the forehead, chest, right nipple and hip.

The police officials have not determined the motive of the killing. However, they assumed that it might have to do with business or conflict with relatives. It was said that some relatives of the victim asked him to share part of his property but that he had rejected the request.

It was also reported also that there had been two frustrated attempts, too, on the life of the victim's daughter Sombat Thongmak, 43.

According to the police, the gunmen were professional killers as the bullets went through the vital parts of the victim's body apparently as targeted to make sure he would not survive the attack. The killers also did the liquidation job calmly and seemed to have studied the victim's movements very well, the police added.
