Inexpensive Std Testing

Recommended Posts

Just as an FYI,

Chlamydia, genital warts, hepatitis, trichomoniasis and thrush are all STDs.

the bkk-usm hospital had or still has a "special" on HPV (human papiloma virus- genital warts) immunisation.

HPV infection is a necessary factor in the development of nearly all cases of cervical cancer!

Besides "raincoats" don't guarantee anything - they are known to fail under certain circumstances!

has anybody seen in any of the kasikornthai bank branches any free giveaway condoms yet?

was a big advertising campaign on tele..... what was that all about I wonder...?

What are they charging for Gardasil in Samui then?

There is a thread in the ladies forum about it mssabai--my recollection is that it is only worth it if you have not yet been infected with the HPV-- and many women already have. So, you'd have to have the test first before getting the vaccine, but my understanding is that in the US and the UK they are going to start including it in vaccines for young teenage girls --so yes, it definitely sounds like its been deemed worth it.

***edit*** but for the life of me I can't recall if it is yet available in Thailand, sorry

Gardasil from Merck is available in Thailand right now

Cervarix from GSK will be very soon

As for being worth it only if you have not been infected is not so clar as you might think. It really depends on what strain you have been infected with. Type 16 and 18 cause 70% of Cervical Cancers - if you have not had these types then it may well still be worth it.

Even if you have been infected with these types it may still be worth it - tell you what - i will go and ask a Dr who specialises in this - be back soon ;-)

Me back - OK the message from a Dr who works in research in this field is that all women should get the HPV vaccine whether they have had sex or not, if they have had HPV or not or even if they have had type 16 and 18

The vaccines protect against more than just those two strains and even if a woman has had any of the HPV tyoes her immune system protecting her from previous or new virus types is not going to be strong enough to fight it off but the vaccine will if its one of the strains covered.

See i can be useful sometimes as well as reasonable ;-)

Update

Gardasil is approved and on the market in Thailand

Cervarix is approved and will be launched at the end of November according to info I just received

The basci difference between the two is Gardasil can help prevent against genital warts as well but Cervarix has probably wider protection against virus types and thus more cancer prevention.

There are head to head clinical trials concerning immunogenicity going on right now and GSK are very confident or they would not have instigated these - its very rare pharma go head to head with their drugs -almost unknown.

I am trying to find out costs right now.

Cheers Prakanong--judging from what I have just read on the internet--every woman should get a vaccine. Regardless of sexual activity.

According to this site: http://www.imshealth.com/web/end/0,3150,64...574988,00.html:

In Europe, Gardasil has been priced at €300-360, a slight premium to the US price of $360 (for the three-dose treatment). The cost of Cervarix in Australia is A$460 ($335) for the full course.

So, that makes me wonder what Samuian saw for 4000 baht?

Yes - all women should have it even if they have been sexually active and even if they have had HPV infection is the past.

It may have been 4000THB per dose requiring three?

Special price at Raffles Hospital was 685 Sing Dollars (15500 THB) including a consultation with a gyno which I know was seen by some Dr's I know as a very good price.

Cervarix has just been launched in the Philippines and they had a day where actresses, singers and other well known women were invited along with other women for discounted vaccinations - my boss and a lot of the women at work had it up to mid-40's - my boss says it was sore afterwords due to adjuvant used to increase the antibody potency but nothing too bad

Hey, a little humour when we're discussing a serious topic is always a bit of a relief. :o

Just don't eat that Yellow Snow, up where the Huskies go...... :D

PS I'm going in early Dec for a full battery of tests for STD's- HIV, syphilis, etc. Better safe than sorry.

I don't see the OP overreacting in any way. A simple question was answered with lectures and judgmental allegations regarding the OP's sexual behavior. Based on absolutely no information whatsoever, I might add.

OP: "Wow - the arrogance and stupidity of some of these posts (Roo, Lao Pao, SamuiJens, this MAY be directed at you)..."

Maybe my interpretation of what I read is different than yours, sbk.. ?

And, I had no "lecture and/or judgmental allegations" towards the OP ! I think you know me better than that.

Rant over.

:o

PLEASE, do not blame me!

I simply reported what I have read on an advert board of the BKK-USM Hospital offering this treatment...

I would suggest call 'em...maybe it's some sponsored thing..

No blaming, just curious, was it for the HPV vaccine or STD testing?

And agreed, Lao Po, your post wasn't nearly as bad, probably not worthy of being ranted at, but sometimes the baby gets thrown out with the bathwater.

Check out the link in my post OlRedEyes, it is pretty comprehensive and where I got my info from-- prakanong seems pretty informed as well :o

We also had a discussion about it in the Ladies forum--check it out-- I think it was Sheryl who was discussing it and she is one of the best informed posters around when it comes to not only women's health issues but health issues in general :D

By the way, how do you get a idea for a forum?? Just out of interest, why is there not a "mansforum" in here? Theres a "ladiesforum" and a lot of rules against women degrading talks. Out of couriosity i would like to know how its created? We could have alot of good talks in the mans forum if there where one. Is it possible also on the feministic thaivisa or is it out of rules?? Just want to know??

BTW serious question.

No, it clearly said "Human Papilloma Virus Infection Prevention" as I can recall...

Cheers samuian, good to know.

Again, mattias, if its important to you then please post in forum support. This thread is actually about a pretty important topic and does not need to be sidetracked with something completely unrelated.
