chrisjohn66 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Hi Any ideas or advise on this problem appreciated My computer has been hanging several times per day, the only application running is bittorrent on my Maxnet connection. I have tried everything, used another computer, tried another anti virus, firewall, and bittorrent program. I check windows admin tools, events, system etc no problem. I tried reducing the number of torrent to about 4 None of this works, any ideas on why my computer is hanging apprecaited. Thanks
lopburi3 Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 The problem could be your ADSL modem - they do not like bittorrent. Make sure you are using the latest software and Google your model and bittorrent and see what you find.
Guest Reimar Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 lopburi3 is right it could be the modem. The chance that it's the modem is quite high if you get the modem from TRUE and may other ISP as well. True is modifying the Firmware and the Users are unable to roll back the change or even chage required settings. Try an new "virgin" Modem.
chrisjohn66 Posted November 17, 2007 Author Posted November 17, 2007 Many thanks to lopburi and Reimar, so it seems your advise was right. I was using a Billion older modem. When I started with Maxnet they gave me a router free which has been gathering dust in its box. I have new installed this and done away with my modem. No hang ups so far. So touch wood, and many thanks again for your prompt and very helpful reply. Speeds are a bit slow with Maxnet but that is another issue. Bye
chrisjohn66 Posted November 22, 2007 Author Posted November 22, 2007 Hi well I managed to get my router working, and even the port forwarding Ok. However the internet connections seems to die away after a couple of hours, I get red icons on utorrent and cannot access a web page. I still seem to get better results using a modem. Any suggestions, If I buy another ADSL modem do u any recommendations that I can buy in Bankok. Thanks Chris
lopburi3 Posted November 22, 2007 Posted November 22, 2007 Be sure not to have the u Torrent speed settings too high. I have happen on occasion and only power down/on resyncs it but only seems to happen when everything is maxed out.
chrisjohn66 Posted November 22, 2007 Author Posted November 22, 2007 I have throttled back utorrent upload and downloads, no effect. I am now looking to replace the ADSL modem and the Router Could you please advise me what is 1. The best ADSL modem to use for bittorrent on Maxnet 2. Alternative, the best router to use for bittorrent on Maxnet For both I am looking for ease of configuration Many thanks Chris

Starting with Windows XP SP2 microsoft basically limits the number of half open TCP/IP connections you can have. This was done to prevent worms and virus's from spreading. This also affects Windows Vista. There is a patch that you can download that was made by hackers. It works well and should resolve this issue if you have XP SP2. Patch for XP SP2 You should she Event ID 4226 in your event log if you have this problem.
chrisjohn66 Posted November 23, 2007 Author Posted November 23, 2007 Hi Many thanks for your suggestions, I have already set the TCP/IP from 10 to 50. I think I have tried everything. So I am going to buy a new ADSL modem or router. I would prefer a modem as portforwarding procedures for routers can be difficult. Could anyone advise an recommendations for a ADSL modem and possibly a router. Mfr. and model number if possible, something that is available to buy in Bangkok Thanks
Daren Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 Have you used utorrent's built-in port checker? What is the result? Personally, I would hold off buying more hardware until you've absolutely ruled out configuration issues. Have you looked at PortForward? They have very good, detailed instructions for configuring hundreds of modems and routers. While forwarding ports may be confusing at first, it's certainly worth the added security, IMO. Also, almost everything I've read has suggested using ports in the higher numbers (40000+), tried it yet? How about encryption in uTorrent, turned it on? If it does come to it, I've got TOT not Max, but I'm quite satisfied with D-Link products. They're certainly not the best but I think they're a good compromise between cost and quality. You can probably get the 1 port router for around 1000B in BKK or online at Thanni.com - D-Link DSL-520T.
jstumbo Posted November 23, 2007 Posted November 23, 2007 (edited) HiMany thanks for your suggestions, I have already set the TCP/IP from 10 to 50. I think I have tried everything. You should set the number closer to 5000+, not just 50, that will still limit you. Also if you are using uTorrent, on the bottom status bar, right before the download speed and amount, it wil have either a green checkmark or a red "x". If it has the checkmark, then your router is probably forwarding to your computer correctly, if it has an x, you still have a configuration issue, mabye a firewall, or configuration of your router. If you look at the configuration of your router, can you select to have the IP address of your computer set in the DMZ? Edited November 23, 2007 by jstumbo
raro Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 I was using a Billion older modem. I also use an older Billion BIPAC 7000 modem that I got free from TT&T three years agor and have no problems with it. Which one do you use? You should set the number closer to 5000+, not just 50, that will still limit you. how to change those settting? Also if you are using uTorrent, on the bottom status bar, right before the download speed and amount, it wil have either a green checkmark or a red "x". If it has the checkmark, then your router is probably forwarding to your computer correctly, if it has an x, you still have a configuration issue, mabye a firewall, or configuration of your router.
