I'll be leaving Thailand for good at the end of this month and need to bring my cat to my girlfriend's family's house near Chiang Mai. If I have a travel box for my cat and give him some tranquilizers so he's not crying incessantly, does anyone know if it's possible to bring a cat on a bus or train?

Any other suggestions for how I can bring him? Thanks for your help.

I've been on sleeper trains with dogs & roosters so no problem with a cat. Don't worry about drugging cat. You can get a plastic carry basket with latched lid & handle at your friendly plastic vendor.

Thanks, myfriend. My girlfriend actually just managed to get through to someone on the phone at the train station. They said too that it was no problem to bring a cat, but we'd have to pay by the kilo. Luckily, my cat's pretty small.

I don't know about the exact details for the train, and nothing about a bus. I will be making the trip in two weeks time, and I'll certainly post my findings here.

Regarding the train, any restrictions as to the class of ticket required?

Any info about taking a cat on a long distance bus?

I took a small dog on the train from Songkhla to Bangkok about five years ago. At that time we were told that animals was allowed on second (and lower) class but not on first class. Also, dogs were not allowed on the busses.

I could have changed so better ask.

I'd be very interested to know

1) what if there was more than one cat - accompanying two passengers, of course all the cats in suitable boxes.

2) in relation to 1st class double compartment - or 2nd class air conditioned

3) do such tkts need to be arranged/bought in advance? at the normal tkt kiosk?

4) are the rules countrywide and for all trains, or restricted to particular routes, periods or durations?
